Bahamas Update

Utter and honest opinion seeing all 4 games at Baha Mar in person. No sugar coating.

It was actually great seeing the team minus the top 2 players James and Precious plus Malcolm D.

Top player insights from the trip.

Ranking the top players at the Bahamas tournament

Top player is a tie

1st - Lester Q. (can shoot lights out and rebound like a mother trucker). Should be best shooting percentage on the team. He doesn't miss much. Great form. Plays like a bull on the court and for a two guard/small forward he eats up a lot of space. Dang tough defender which is likely one of his best skill sets.
Likely a first round pick after year 2-3 in college. Memphis fans will love this guy.

Tied for 1st - DJ Jeffries
OMG this guy was money all 4 games. WAY TOUGHER then I expected. DJ is the real deal. Soft touch inside. Rebounding machine. He’s a fighter and refuses to get out worked. Likely a first round pick after year 2 at Memphis. If things go well he could be a first round pick after his freshman year. But honestly he needs 2 years at Memphis to get NBA strong.

Memphis fans will root for DJ throughout his career.
He’s a good guy and and a fighter for the Tigers. Maybe too much of a fighter and should be more careful when things get feisty. In a real game he would have been kicked out in the last game had there been video replay. No need for that when you are more talented.

Advice to DJ...Don’t take the bait. They are trying to get you to do something to get kicked out of a game.

2nd - Boogie (great vision and explosive w good shooting touch). He will be a NBA player after his 2nd or 3rd year at Memphis. Could be a 1st rounder this year but still has a lot to show before that happens.

3rd - Damon Baugh was the real shocker. His confidence grew each game and by game 4 he was a real leader on the floor. Dude is a gamer and has no fear.

There was a period against the Bahama National Team when our team was getting down on themselves. He flat out took over and won the game for us and got the rest of the team jacked up.

He plays best at the top of the key with the ball in his hands. He should see a lot of time at the 1 position. Damon is way better at 1 vs shooting guard spot. Damon was the steal of the class.

I almost gave Damon the #2 spot but Boogie is just so naturally gifted and will be a little better than Damon in year one. But don’t count Damon out cuz he showed some serious game in Nassau.

Damon will likely need 3 years at Memphis to be a 1st rounder but he’s got a real shot. After year 2 he could be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. If he sticks around he could be a D Wade type player. He’s got that much raw talent.

4th - tie between Lance and Alo. Lance impressed me and was a force on defense. His offense isn't very good but he's much more physical then expected. If Lance stays on the block on offense he could get serious points per game. But every player wants to shoot 3’s. IMO
inside players should just perfect their inside game.

Alo - he has come A LONG way since last year. Stronger, faster, and much improved shooting. He's still a little too unselfish. Several times he kicked the ball out when he had a clear lane to a layup. Alex has to just take the ball to the hole and he’s the complete player at his size.

Both will make great money overseas and should have long term careers with a shot at the NBA. Lance probably has the advantage due to size. He is really tall. Lance could be a great stretch forward but has to improve mid range shooting to do so.

5th - Tyler. This is hard to say because I’m a huge TH fan. His game was similar to last year. Steaky shooting, Had great steals, some great and some bad passes, and still pouts a little when things don't go his way.

He’s got to understand his role and be who he is which is a dog on defense and a great shooter when he’s wide open. Love the kid and he will be a fabulous Tiger and will likely be top ten in scoring over a 4 year college career. NBA isn’t in the cards only due to size but a long term career overseas is definitely there assuming he knows what his strengths and weaknesses are. Being 5’9, he couldn’t be a better player then he is.

At the same time Tyler is 5’9 so as a player you just have to roll with reality and set realistic expectations for yourself. But he’s damn fun to watch!!!

I just hope Tyler stays a Tiger, graduates, makes a ton of money overseas, and doesn’t let outsiders get in his ear.

6th - Hardaway. He's bigger then I thought he'd be. Not a great scorer but he doesn't hurt you when he's on the court. Plays pretty darn good defense. Definitely a good mid to end of the bench role player. Way better player then I expected and he deserves to be a full ride scholarship player.

7) Maurice - improved some from last year but still soft for his size. He should be a rebounding machine but he just doesn't work hard enough to be a dog. He played well vs the 2 crappy teams we played. Not so good against the better teams. I’d love to see him just get mean and be a force on rebounds. When he posts up close to the basket he’s unstoppable but tends to wander out to the 3 point line. Just get down low and fight and he’s a 10/7 guy every night.

8) Boyce - He doesn't look comfortable and a little intimated by all our talent. He showed some good stuff but mainly held back from trying hard. He showed flashes of his athleticism but he needs to Bring It every minute on the floor. Lots of upside and should be a starter his Jr/Sr year if he works hard.
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. I took a lot of time to review my notes from the games before putting it down on paper.

As a Tiger fan it’s hard to say anything negative about any of these guys cuz you can see they are all highly vested in getting better.

I was actually reluctant to share my thoughts but I hope they are perceived as constructive and in no way demeaning

Great analysis. Thanks.
Good stuff.

Just a quick note. It's pretty rare for players now to stay 2 or 3 years in college and become 1st round picks. The second thing is that more and more players are declaring for the draft and more and more are staying in the draft whether they get drafted or not. Last year there were 44 underclassmen that declared and stayed in the draft and went undrafted. It's a big problem now because the deadline to return to college is after the spring signing period. So we might have some guys that declare and stay in the draft but don't get drafted after the season.
Generally agree with most except you are way overly optimistic if you think any kid on this team is going first round after freshman year other than James and most likely Precious. Just won’t be ready. If you have watched the Grizz G League team, they would beat the Memphis Bahamas team by 30. And regular season would be tough but by February Tigers might win.

Grown ass dawgs.

Nice analysis...

Good to get the viewpoint of someone who was there.

Thanks for the info
Pretty good assessment.

Tiger fans are going to immediately fall in love with Lester, DJ and Damion. These guys just do what it takes to win.

I knew this squad was going to be athletic, but the thing that surprised me the most was just how unselfish they all were.

And to think, there are 3 more pieces that we didn't even get to see. This could be a fun year.

I think Lance Thomas looked great. The guy is physical and can run the court unbelievably fast. He’ll play a lot this year. He was a surprise to me, his first year stats at Louisville were super low so I based my expectations on that. Yeah, I get it, he was a freshman... Really athletic, will be an excellent player in this up tempo offense. He still needs to work out his outside shot...
Thanks for sharing. It's nice to hear from someone who was there, so this is good stuff here. There's a lot to love right now regarding our basketball team!! GTG

It's going to be hard to wait for the season. Luckily we have a great football team to follow in the mean time.

+3 I saw them in person as well and think you did an excellent job of breaking them down. I might would rank them a little differently.

1) Baugh
Gonna be the leader of this team and he hates to lose.
2) Lester
Hustles, rebounds and shoots well.
3) Thomas
Gets after it in every play. Another leader.
4) DJ
Another scrapper. Does it all. Drives the ball well.
5) Boogie
Great nose for the ball.
6) Alo
Has really improved all aspects of his game.
7)Tyler
Much improved as well.
8) Jayden
Much better than expected.
9) Maurice
What can I say.
10) Boyce
Needs to get stronger.
You lost me at "3rd round pick". But other than that, thanks for the analysis.
