Quote:The expansion of wine and beer service comes in apparent response to requests from attendees and alumni.

“Many of our ticket holders have told us that they would like additional locations for the purchase of beer and wine during our events,” athletic director Jim Knowlton said in the statement. “At the same time, it is imperative that we continue to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all of our fans in a family-friendly environment.”

Beer and wine have already been sold at Tailgate Town, in the beer garden and in several campus club locations. This season, Cal will add eight standalone purchasing spots throughout the stadium. Alcohol will not be sold in the student- or family-designated sections. Wristbands will be given to those with IDs and must be worn in order to purchase alcohol.

“We have been deliberate in our planning ... over the past several months,” Knowlton said in the statement. “While we have confidence in the systems we are putting in place to manage sales and consumption, we will not hesitate to make appropriate adjustments if needed.”

Beer and wine sales are scheduled to end at the beginning of the third quarter.

According to the statement, Cal said five other Pac-12 schools — and more than 60 of the 129 FBS schools nationwide — offer beer at football games.

Sure would not want to be on the roads around there when games end.

Might drive attendance more if they let the Berkeley hipsters smoke weed there.

Can't do it. Blame the feds if you're upset about it -- universities that receive federal funding are required as a condition of that funding to prohibit possession and use on campus or any other university-owned property.

How can you be upset with the Federal government for enforcing existing laws?

Every government at every level enforces its vast set of laws selectively. Your opinion of whether a particular government is doing it right depends on which laws you want to be enforced and which you want to be ignored.

Was only being semi-facetious about it.
