Surprised he hadn't been nabbed before this. But it looks like a lateral move - at best.
UTRGV did a football study and apparently wants to add football but it looks like a big challenge. The school is spread over two cities and happens to be two of the poorest counties in Texas.

They are in the WAC so travel is significant.

My guess is he hopes to jump start his career by leading the addition of football or didn't mesh with new chancellor and wants a change of scenery

I seriously doubt the Chancellor was a problem.
Might have been money?

On the other hand, having a basketball coach not of his choosing forced on him by the Chancellor probably didn't help.

That would do it for me.
Bingo

A GREAT move.....!!!!
1. Close to South Padre Island. (Beautiful beaches and great Mexican food).
2. Only 621 miles from Lubbock (Texas Tech).
3. Will get to go to Lubbock on December 12, 2019 to play TT in basketball...!!!!!!!

Congratulations...........02-13-banana02-13-banana02-13-banana
Got to believe it was the basketball coaching situation. Unless Darrell is a huge success it was an absolutely terrible decision for our entire athletic program.

I was very worried after the hiring, but I guessed I hadn't thought about it for a while. What a blow for our program.

I agree. The move doesn’t make much sense other than if he no longer had the final say on athletics. I thought Chase did a good job on everything he had a say in except the successor to Coach Beard.

Agreed, this is seriously bad news for Little Rock athletics. I think this development may be looked back on as a benchmark, and not in a good way.

I can't imagine that Chasse and Lisa would want to move their family from Little Rock to the South Texas Mexican border, and a Mexican border location that is way, way off the beaten path unless:

1) UTRGV was going to pay a lot more than his present salary;
2) There was no reasonable prospect at Little Rock in the foreseeeable future for a raise to near the amount UTRGV was offering;
3) The financial situation at UALR is worse than we even knew, and for the athletic department in particular;
4) Having a coach for the most prominent sport Little Rock sponsors shoved down his throat by the Chancellor, not to mention a basketball coach who had previously insulted him; AND;
5) The money that the Chancellor may have been conned into thinking would be forthcoming from the big money people who insisted on said basketball coach has never materialized.

Put all that together, and a job at UTRGV starts looking pretty good!
A bit back I did FOI and found UALR was only offering all the allowed scholarships in men's and women's hoops, volleyball and baseball. Other ten sports were below limit.

I found it interesting that part of the deal to start Hatcher's wrestling was that he would fully fund the program and provide some scholarship money for the underfunded women's sports to try to offset Title IX concerns.
Either RGV really sweetened the pot, or something is very wrong in Little Rock. (Unless he has connections in south Texas.)

If DW is not a success it was a horrible decision for our entire athletic department? Is that what you are saying?

I too think Chasse did a very good job. He screwed the pooch when he hired Wes for sure. Other than that, I am pleased with the job he's done. I know nothing about the Walker deal, but I'd pretty well think that Peter and Mickey are pretty close to the truth on that deal. I'd think that with three times as many students, that he's making more money. Good luck anyway Chasse. Still proud of your hiring of Chris Beard. He got the programs heart beating again, and then we had the massive heart attack with Wes.
So bizarre he hires a highly successful D2 coach who knocks it out of the park. Year later I’m thinking one of the other highly successful D2’s supposedly finalists gets hired in a fast search. And that doesn’t happen. Time comes for another hire and still doesn’t go back to the template that worked.

Maybe that’s just Conque going with what he thinks is best or maybe that’s an AD getting overridden.

The Wes Flannigan hire was all on Chasse. The Walker hire was forced on him by others.

Exactly what I am saying. I'm worried about the survival of our program for the first time since the Newell days. Decreasing enrollment, budget deficits, our bell-weather sport at the bottom of the league for 2 years straight, and now losing a great AD right before the start of the Fall sports season. No idea who will be chosen to sail the ship for the next several months. How do we find an AD (from a lower level program) or even an assistant AD who will leave their current job right in the middle of the Fall sports season? I think we'll be more or less "okay", if Darrell can have a decent season. But, if we have another disaster of a season, it's going to put us in a hole that will be tough to dig out of.

Back to the original issue, I guess it's possible that Chasse was made an offer he just couldn't refuse. But, realistically, I believe Chasse really loved Little Rock and wouldn't have moved his family to a directional school on the Mexican border unless he felt really "dissed" during the hiring of the our last men's basketball coach. I guess I was "okay" with the hiring because I assumed Chasse ultimately "came around" and was agreeable to bringing Darrell in. However, if the hiring was really forced down his throat, it was just a matter of time until he was out of here.
