Quote:Harris vetoed the $1 million for renovations to the university’s swimming facilities Sunday, saying the university should present a timeline or plan to bring its lowest-paid workers up to a living wage in order for him to support the funding.

Harris’ offer is “an exchange of money for direct influence on the operational pay policies of the University,” Rudd wrote. “Our accreditation standards are very clear. I report to the Board of Trustees, not the county mayor.”

Good for Dr Rudd!
Mayor does seem a bit out of his lane

Here comes Wendi Thomas. She'd find fault with a $100 bill.
Reason for the money isn't to help the university.

Lee Harris is a simpleton.
Unfunded mandates are the worst in government. Lee had plenty of time to lobby for increased funding for higher education.

With the lower # of students graduating high school, the budget of the UofM will only get tighter over the next 5 years. Rudd isn't going to jail for fraud, and he's not going to make our tuition noncompetitive with our in-state peers. And politically, Higher education funding is getting cut nationwide. This isn't the time to take risks.

Good for Rudd standing up to this nonsense.
What an idiot. Lol. And some of yall thought the vols couldn't play at the liberty bowl if they wanted.

Here is a solution. Build it at Lambuth and tell the shittey of Memphis to eff off.

This is yet another example of why the city and the university are not one and the same. The city will frick the univ at every turn. The Univ should be it's own town and secede.
Evidently The County Mayor does not not understand the accrediting process. I am shocked that a man of his educational background, especially considering his history of serving on the faculty at UofM as an adjunct professor, he would be unfamiliar with that process, but it sure appears he is not. Then again, this also appears to simply be a politically expedient move on his part. It BACKFIRED!

and folks wonder why the rest of the state just laughs at the Memphis Democrats
Politicians like Lee Harris possessing zero experience with private sector P&L responsibility always make us experienced folks chuckle when it comes to the $15 minimum wage requirements. They haven't a clue that wage rates are a function of job responsibilities and market forces.

I never said they couldn't if they wanted to, or that the City wouldn't accommodate them.

Why do you think Tennessee wants to play a neutral-site game in a stadium they haven't done so in 23 years?

No one plays neutral-site games unless they're NFL or NFL-adjacent quality facilities.
The chairman of the Shelby County Commission said he would try to override the Harris veto...

The plan is to renovate the old pool thus saving $20M.

UT played those in Memphis many times in the past. UCLA in 65 I think was one of the best games ever played there. I was a witness. Saw them play old mrs there too.

Gaaaaaa!!!

You are the worst dude
So, what's all the taxes going to?! $1 million is cheap to update a pool, so the public can have access to it, and, learn an important skillset, swimming.

Yea, secession works so well. Your response is equally as negative and nonproductive as the political espionage perpetrated by Harris. You can’t make things better if the solution is abandoning the home front.

Harris will lose this battle because he wasn’t savvy enough to know the university had already made a commitment to do exactly what he asked for in holding the promised funding hostage. He also looks bad for hurting a project that addresses inner-city youth safety. And last he looks bad for playing politics when the university is acting to be one the best assets and best change agents the city has. He let a political element encourage him to put a political agenda ahead of a good partner.

Town and gown conflicts are common but rarely at an impasse.
