Ex-NFL QB Jared Lorenzen dead at 38 after battling multiple health issues, family says
Former NFL quarterback Jared Lorenzen died Wednesday at the age of 38 after battling kidney and heart issues as well as an infection, his family announced.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jared today," the family of the former New York Giants backup said in a statement Wednesday. "Please keep Jared's family and especially his children, in your thoughts and prayers."

Lorenzen played four seasons with the Kentucky Wildcats before going pro. He held the Wildcats record for most career passing yards with 10,354, and served as a backup quarterback for the Giants from 2006 to 2007.

Lorenzen last played football for the Northern Kentucky River Monsters of the Continental Indoor Football League but a broken leg ultimately ended his career.

I'm assuming he never got that weight under control.

Very sad, he was quite the figure in early-2000s SEC football. Made Kentucky somewhat relevant in the first time in forever. A big spark of fun at the time.

One of those games was the "Bluegrass Miracle" LSU vs UK game in 2002, where LSU scored on a long hail-Mary at the buzzer to win, but what I remember was how effective JL was against Nick Saban's defense, IIRC he threw several TD passes in that game and was a big reason it was such a barn-burner.

RIP. 07-coffee3
Never cared for the guy myself. He posted this on his Twitter account not too long ago. If you’re a public figure you need to be better than this. Let’s just say I’m not shedding any tears.

Something tells me he couldn't even if he wanted to. Some people are just like that.

I just posted the 8 OT game he had against Arkansas in another thread. That's my main memory of him. As big as he was, he knew how to carry that weight. Arkansas's players seemed like they were slipping off of him trying to tackle him towards the end. Tough guy, and it's sad to see him go like this.

It's almost like he played for Louisville's rival or something. 07-coffee3

Thank you for sharing this wonderful picture. All of us that are not thin skinned Louisville fans will surely enjoy it.

Rest in peace, Jared!
You don’t usually see former players carrying on that way. He was a next level asshat.

Lorenzen was always the UK player I liked the most. Mostly because of how he handled the constant question about his playing weight ... especially tough when you're 18. But he never shied away from that, and even cracked jokes about it too.

I know he popped off about the Cards, but so what? It's a rivalry. It's the place where you are supposed to pop off ... rather than in any other part of society.

I'll never forget him going through his favorite nick names he heard people call him ...

RIP big guy.
A local product here in Cincinnati (Ft. Thomas Highlands, Ky)- He is well liked in these parts. Not to pee on his grave, but his weight is ultimately what shortened his life. 38 years is not enough time on this planet. Guys- reduce your calories to about 2500 a day, eat less refined sugar and get plenty of exercise.

This kind of thing resonates with me, because when i was 33, I weighed 420 pounds and had a heart condition. The doctor told me I would probably die quietly in my sleep in the next couple years if I didn't drop a lot of weight. It was 1997 and he said it was 50/50 that I would see the year 2000.

That was right before the gastric surgery became a thing, so I did it the old fashioned way and lost 210 pounds in a year on 1200 calorie diet. That was also right before another Jared, Jared the Subway Pervert, lost all his weight, but I didn't do it at Subway so couldn't cash in, LOL.

I've kept it off and am 55 now and in fine health. Wish JL could have found a way to do the same.

Yes, this guy just DIED for crissakes, that should transcend petty college rivalry crapola. Rest In Peace, Jared.
