From ESPN:

Quote:The University of Maryland at College Park has been warned that its accreditation "may be in jeopardy," and has until March 1, 2020, to prove to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education that it has a structure that "outlines roles, responsibilities, and accountability for decision-making."

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education issued a release Friday that Maryland had "insufficient evidence that the institution is currently in compliance with Standard VII (Governance, Leadership, and Administration)."

It's a procedural move that resulted from the scrutiny the university faced following the death last year of former Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair to heatstroke he suffered during a May 29 workout, but the accrediting body was not investigating how McNair was treated or the events that surrounded his death June 13.

Instead, the warning came as the result of a review into how the University System of Maryland Board of Regents might have overstepped its authority in trying to make personnel decisions regarding former coach DJ Durkin and university president Wallace D. Loh.
Would the ACC take 'em back after the B1G kicks them out?

No. There's no room at the inn.

But they are morally speaking a twin for UNC! How could you refuse?

People think the NCAA is the poster-child for impotent leadership, but they pale in comparison to theses college accrediting boards.
Maryland and West Virginia would make a nice combo in the ACC.

Notre Dame could stay independent that way.
Wonder if ESPN is leading with this story like they did after our dips-hit Governor replaced the Louisville board multiple times a couple of years ago. Much to do about nothing. ESPN just trying to create some college athletics news where there isn’t any. Maryland will be fine

But, in the world of higher education, this stuff is a black eye, even if it is pretty much only finger-wagging. It sends a clear message, even if through its silos and fiefdoms, that leadership at UMD is not very solid, stable, or capable for the tasks in which it is charged. Any serious leadership role will likely produce candidates who will know all about this stuff.

It is a bigger deal than it looks, but, I agree. It's merely a gesture.

UMD will easily clear this. What will be annoying is the work the BoT will have to do to put this through and appease the accrediting body. That's going to be a lot of work for your interim president's office and maybe provost? The work of "volunteers" delegating down. I doubt UMD's actual board will be working on this themselves...

...and if you work in higher ed, again, you're going to know that, and, depending on the position, you will steer clear of the place.
MD has real issues that goes back decades.

MD's issues go back the 1950's when Tatum made football greater than the University, then in the 1970's when they lost so many programs to Baltimore, they got worse with Bias's death, then the various booster non-profit wing began diverting contributions, then the prices started to rise, Then Kirwan began his quest to take UMCP out of the ACC as partial cover for taking over every school in the UM system and attempting to stick their tenticles into DC. MD's go to move is to blame a recently department department head or adminstrator - the real blame is on the BOT and the MD legislature.

The only wildcard I see is that Middle States is not Southeastern- but maybe they are all the same.

Fake courses gets you a minor warning letter.
Board getting into the weeds gets you a threatening letter.

That's a little harsh, don't you think? They only had 20 years of fake courses. Surely a warning letter is enough. 07-coffee3

The scarcity of positions available at flagship universities is such that it is an knife fight among admins when one comes open. Moreover, if UMD fails to comply, what is the accrediting body going to do? Everybody knows the university accreditation isn't in jeopardy so at most they'll get a strongly worded letter with 5 years to turns things around.

The Big Ten administration in College Park is a gift that keeps on giving.

Otoh, in 5 years in the Big Ten, UMD has been pretty successful:

It’s been five years since Maryland moved to the Big Ten.

In that time, the Terps have been one of the most successful schools in the Big Ten, winning five national championships and claiming 32 Big Ten championships. There have been numerous All-Americans, Big Ten Players of the Year and Big Ten Coaches of the Year.

Congrats on all of your accomplishments in tiddlywinks, connect four, and hackeysack!
This occurs more often than you might think. Texas Tech was on accreditation probation back in 2007 and was cleared a year later. Louisville was on probation from 2016-17.

Michigan State has its own issues because of Dr. Larry Nasser and is on HLC's "Watch List", but their accreditation review isn't until 2025.

And USC is going to have issues themselves with not only the admissions scandal but also issues with the Keck Medical School, which already has their Cardiovascular Fellowship lose its accreditation. And their health center gynecologist was pulling a Nasser
This is only topped by their new president who started this week is Dr. Carol Fort, who happened to be the Chancellor at Chapel Hill from 2013-2019 as they defended themselves from their own academic scandal.
Maryland since joining the BIG.

3 National Titles in Womens Lacrosse.

1 National Title in Mens Soccer.

1 National Title in Mens Lacrosse.

2 final fours in womens basketball.

2 super regionals in baseball.

Not as shabby as a certain poster would lead you to believe.

Happy to have you aboard, Maryland. The ACC's loss is definitely the BIG's gain, no matter what those fanboys of the ACC say.

On topic, it is a very sad situation with Jordan McNair. Obviously procedures weren't in place or he would still be with us today. That's the most I know or have educated myself on to this point. As far as losing Accreditation and the lack responsibility by the BOR, I haven't read the details to that yet.
