Full Version: JOE GIGLIO on how the ACC bowl lineup will change in 2020

Joe Giglio: The order after the Orange and Outback has yet to be finalized. The ACC has used a “tier” system which will likely be tweaked. There’s a possibility the Camping World, Gator, Pinstripe, Belk and Holiday bowls will be grouped together in the ACC’s top tier. That would put the Military, Sun and Boston in the second tier.

The league would also have contingency spots in Tampa, Dallas and Birmingham, Ala. for years when it has more than nine bowl-eligible teams.

1. Orange (ESPN)
1a. Outback when Big Ten gets Orange slot. (ABC/ESPN) (2 times out of 6 years)

Top Tier (2-6)
2. Camping World vs B12 (ESPN)
3. Holiday vs P12 (FOX)
4. Gator vs SEC (ESPN)
5. Belk vs SEC/B10 (ESPN)
6. PinStripe vs B10 (ESPN)

Lower Tier (7-9)
7. Sun vs P12 (CBS)
8. Boston vs AAC (ESPN)
9. Military vs AAC (ESPN)

Conditional tie-ins
Gasparilla vs. SEC (ESPN)
Birmingham vs. SEC (ESPN)
First Responder vs G-5 (ESPN)

I don't agree with his analysis. The Camping World will stay ahead of the Top Tier pool based on payout. If the Holiday can maintain its current payout, it may alternate with the Camping World. It's ratings since it moved to Fox have been weak, however. Also, the Sun continues to have an excellent payout and will almost certainly remain in the pool with the Gator, Pinstripe and Belk.

Alternatively, the ACC could go to a pool like the SEC's, with the Camping World, Holiday, Gator, Pinstripe and Belk all in the Top Tier but with a unstated pecking order within the pool based on payout.

Lower Tier will include Fenway and Military. However, I believe the Gasparilla has been signed as a guaranteed slot, not a conditional one. Birmingham and First Responder would be conditional.

I noticed both articles, https://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-spt...story.html and Giglio's, did not use conditional at all in the articles. Both almost make it sound as if there are ACC bowls teams available they will be placed. Granted that may be wrong interpretation, but typically it is usually worded conditional bowl tie-ins not contingency. It will be interesting to see the wording when the bowls come out.

I do think the lower tier order to ensure bowl is filled.
7 Sun vs P12 (Due to CBS, ACC probably wants to ensure they get a bowl team)
8 Military vs AAC
9 Boston vs AAC
10 Gasparilla vs SEC
11 Dallas Area (Wonder if it will be First Responder when B12 not in it and if ACC may be the Armed Forces bowl when B12 not in it? Or, ACC vs B12/G5 First Responder)

Conditional if SEC/AAC is empty
12 Birmingham

Where ever they are going it will of course include a win over the Hokies.
What graphic? Looks like alphabetical listing.
And no ‘tiers’?

You're right my bad. Apparently everything down to the Boston bowl is one tier. So all bowls will be slotted by the conference.

So we agree it will be a few years, then?

It will happen much much much sooner than that empty trophy case in Blacksburg will be filled by anything other than dust.

•Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa, Florida)
•Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, Alabama)
•SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (Dallas, Texas)

In all, the ACC will have 10 guaranteed bowl berths every year.

WOW!!! The league will do away with its previous tier structure, lumping all of the above bowls into one pool after the Orange Bowl gets the first selection. The conference and bowl games will make the bowl selections based on “geographic proximity, avoiding repeat appearances and matchups and regular-season won-loss records.”

New tier structure: under the new agreement, an ACC team will be selected for either the Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa), Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, Ala.), or First Responder Bowl (Dallas). {Which seems to be an upgrade over Detroit and Shreveport}

ACC Bowl Lineup - 2020-2025
•CFP Selection
•Capital One Orange Bowl (Miami Gardens, Florida)
------•Outback Bowl (Tampa, Florida) – Only if the ACC’s opponent in the Capital One Orange Bowl is from the Big Ten

The ACC and bowl partners make team selections based on several factors, including geographic proximity, avoiding repeat appearances and matchups, and regular-season won-loss records.

•TaxSlayer Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, Florida)

ESPN Events and the following bowls will collaborate on the selection of one ACC team per year to play in only one of the three bowls listed.

•Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa, Florida)
•Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, Alabama)
•SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (Dallas, Texas)

I want to see the payouts, but at first glance i like this much better.. I would give up the part time Outback slot for a Full Time slot in Nashville, but I get it..
Tiers don't put butts in seats.

Tiers don't take into account how a team finishes and who is going pro and not playing in the bowl.

True and really all that matters for the secondary bowls.
Until a 6-6 ND gets picked over you.
Kudos to Joe in the OP...he had a good source.
