When I think of Mickey this song comes to mind:

Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
To live

They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet

Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
`Round here

Short People are just the same
As you and I
(A Fool Such As I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It's A Wonderful World)

Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
To love

They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick 'em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time
Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
'Round here

Suppose you are a 6' 9" 5* high school basketball player and this 5' 7" white guy who never played college basketball comes waltzing into your living room and says he wants you to play for him. What would you think?

There's something to that."What coach did you play for/ where did you play/ who did you play with?" He couldn't answer those questions nearly as appealingly as most of his competitors.

So... all you have to do is put yourself in position and then hope you get the breaks? Wow. I had no idea.

To be fair, this is a reasonable point. HOWEVER, Mick's problem is his teams were in realistic position, with a true contender, one time. Nevermind that they lost in the second round, that team was the kind of team if he repeatedly put together would break through with deep runs. We've seen it with Villanova. We've seen it with Virginia. But both those programs had protected seed (Often 1 and 2 seed) type teams year after year.

Guys- I know he can get defensive. Heck most coaches do. PR May not be his strong suit. Heck Andy Furman used to say Huggs had rabbit ears.

I posted the link so people could read it. But I think so many people are annoyed by him that everything that is said is taken the worst way.

I am not a Mick apologist, but Isn’t it accurate that it is easier to recruit there?

The writer and editor chose to put part of the article as the title. They could’ve chose something else very mundane , but this gets more clicks. That’s how it works, guys.

How is what he said Not accurate? And how is that taking a shot at the program.? Of course he’s a little defensive and he wanted more love. We all know that.

If we don’t get in a better conference it will always be easier to recruit there, Unless we just get an unbelievable coach - see brad Stevens.

Not buying the conference argument. Penny, Kelvin and Dan Hurley seem to be doing better than mick at recruiting with few years in the aac. They are doing better than mickster did in the big east too in my opinion.

One name: Mark Few.

Recruited circles around Mick to a little Catholic college, in a minor conference, in the middle of nowhere.

Now we have a guy who can say he played for Billy Donovan and has his name in his D1 institution's Hall of Fame...we'll see how much it matters.

I don't even need to respond to zcat's post... it has been handled. But clearly other programs outside of the P5 have done just fine.

I used that song for my "Calestetics to Music" project in high school gym class.

I think Mick is a fool for saying half of that stuff. But What I said was recruiting to UCLA Will be easier than recruiting to the Bearcats. Regardless of Mark Few or Memphis or anything else. That’s a different Argument and I hope Coach Brannon can recruit at least as well as them.

Mick is very principled and loyal - to a fault (see Him playing seniors over more talented juniors).! He puts his foot in his mouth of course, but I have a feeling his principles would not allow him to take any of his former players from Cincinnati to UCLA.

Heck He says positive things about Bob, but I don’t think they have any real relationship (compare it to Pitino). He took the high road when Bob’s name came up many times.

That is beyond dispute. What I dispute is Mick's implication that UC can't hope to compete with non-elite P5s.

Without Bob he'd have never gotten the UC job. He definitely should say positive things.

Without Huggs he would be coaching Cleveland State and with time will get there.

Beyond dispute, but that is was what Mick said. He was not throwing UC under the bus. If he blends his strong D, with naturally talented scorers, he could definitely get to a FF. Big Q is, will he switch to straight man if needed, or feel the need to stay in a match up zone. A person doesn’t need to show that they are genius defensive coach. The goal is to win the game. If your players are more talented let them play to their strength.
