A truly a classy gentleman. They don't make them like him much anymore.

Actually met him once in a restaurant in Birmingham. We noticed him and his wife sitting with a grandchild, and not wanting to make a pest of ourselves we didn't want to disturb him for an autograph. The waitress overheard us talking and said he comes in regularly with his family, and offered to ask him if we could get an autograph for us. She went over and spoke to him and pointed our way. The man stood up and walked over to our table and stuck his hand out and said "Hi, I'm Bart Starr."

I. Was. Dumbfounded.

I think I stumbled to my feet and muttered my name, I really don't remember. He mentioned about someone wanting an autograph, and offered to sign something right there, or if we'd give him our name and address he'd send a signed picture. My teenage son jumped on that and wrote out his name and address. We exchanged a few more pleasantries and he returned to his family.

That was a Saturday evening, and in our mailbox Monday afternoon was a signed, personalized picture to my son with a letter about meeting us at the restaurant the previous Saturday and how he enjoyed talking to us and wishing us well. That just cemented in our mind what we had always thought and hoped - that he was one of the good guys you want your childhood heroes to really be like if you get to meet them.

Rest In Peace Mr. Starr.
