WMU was VERY high on Reed after his freshman season. Many expected him to be the best WR in the MAC for the next two seasons... Not anymore.
In the off-season, WMU also lost probable starting WR Watson as a transfer and moved starting WR Eskridge to defense. Gonna be a mess for them at WR now after expecting to be deep there this season. Eskridge will probably have to move back to offense.

As I've suggested, I think there is tampering going on in CFB and MBB with the new transfer portal.

The tampering doesn't need to be explicit but can be very implicit.
WMU's RB Chase Brown (future starter in the wings) has also entered the transfer portal.

And for reference, Jayden Reed was a freshman all-American and lead WMU in all receiving categories (I believe).

No coincidence that Reed and Brown were roommates. Probably fed off each other's egos and ambitions and decided to go all-in with P5 dreams.

Comes a few weeks after another WR Keishawn Watson entered the portal. Not a "stud" but had experience. Dropped off a bit in 2018 but was the leading receiver in 2017.

With question marks now suddenly popping up on our O, and our obvious issues on D, I just can't muster up much optimism.
Maybe they just didn't like the coach or the program. Fuel To The Fire

Just a matter of time before this happens to virtually all MAC programs. Social media, the egos, the mentality of kids today.....and now this transfer portal all add up to the perfect storm.

Actually don't mind that the players now have more power to decide their future, since the coaches & teams & NCAA certainly look out for themselves first.....so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

The next step will be everybody being able to transfer without sitting out a year. The precedent has already been set by Justin Fields transferring TO OSU and getting a waiver to play right away, and Tate Martell subsequently transferring OUT of OSU to the Hurricanes and getting the same waiver. If those 2 got the waivers, so should everybody else.

One point NO ONE mentions:

I believe in the 'olden days' athletic scholarships were for 4 years so there was an implicit, if not explicit, commitment between player and school. If you score 2.5 GPA and 2.1 PPG you got a free ride for your years.... Now, the PPG better be higher. That was an example, but the rule was do well in school and keep your nose clean and we won't rescind your scholarship regardless of your on court performance (or lack there of).

Now, athletic scholarships are one year (renewable) so there isn't the commitment either way.

Probably two of the most insightful posts ever on this site! This just has to be fixed or college athletics will be on life support soon.

If that happens, it'd decimate the MAC, along with CUSA and Sun Belt, and make us a de facto "minor league" system to the "pros" (P5s).

Having to sit on the sidelines for an entire year is the only deterrent keeping the spigot half-closed. Remove that, the number of budding freshman/sophomore studs looking to sell themselves off to the bigger stage will skyrocket.

I agree. The (possible) redshirt year + transfer year does work against players transferring. It is kind of 'okay, but you will only play 3 years..."

Yep. It will be very difficult to watch MAC football if that happens.

You're definitely right about players trickling up - but I think players will trickle down too. The door goes both ways and MAC teams will be able to snag guys from larger programs who want to move on too.

Generally, I'm for players doing this stuff though. College Football players are a workforce and need to be treated as such with all the rights that they should get. I'd love to see them unionize to be honest.

Yes, but the players 'moving up' are better than the players 'moving down.'
Let's also remember that there were a LOT of college juniors that declared for the NFL draft this year. At least 135 left early this past season, which is substantially higher than previous years. Thus, there was a LOT of demand for transfer especially at P5 programs where they were more likely to lose juniors to the draft.

Maybe in future years, as fewer juniors leave for the draft, there will be fewer transfer opportunities. And thus fewer players entering the transfer portal.

Agree.

These juniors have to be smarter and get BETTER advice (no more telling them what they want to hear, but accurate advice).

I believe a lot of the juniors with eligibility remaining did NOT get drafted.

There is no G-League in football for those who don't make the pros. Come out early and don't get drafted and there goes ones football career, cut short, by bad judgement.
Agreed, Steve. Just look at Tyree Jackson: left early and went undrafted.

Players should be allowed to declare for the draft and if they go undrafted return to school and play
There's tons of guys in the transfer portal that are probably in for a rude awakening pretty soon. Good luck finding a scholarship when there's only so many spots still open.

Excellent point! Many schools this time of year don't have a scholarship available and those that do, it's likely related to a player entering the transfer portal.

FIRE UP CHIPS! :)
