Wise move so far
Trei Cruz absolutely clubbed a two run homer over the hill. Owls 2-0 after 1.
Evan ends the 6th with his 7th K of the night. Owls up 3-0 going into bottom of the 6th.
Owl’s 3rd run came in 5th on triple by Aaron and RBI single by Braden.
Evan gets two more Ks (now 9) to take us to the stretch, still up 3-0
Trei triple and Andrew sac fly makes it 4-0 going to T9.
Rice wins! 4-0!
Nice win. Great job on the mound tonight for the Owls.
I'm glad I was there to see Evan's final home game of his Rice career. IMO, he is, without a doubt, the feel good story of the season. Great work ethic and great kid all around. I'd be shocked if he's not drafted by the 7th or 8th round, and could now go as early as the fourth round.

Game ball #1: Evan Kravetz (W, 5-2, 7.1 IP, 3 hits, 0 runs, 4 BBs, 10 Ks)-- just a masterful home climax to a season of redemption for the big southpaw. ERA now down to 3.33 on the season with 103 Ks in 75.2 IP. 04-bow

Game ball #2: Trei Cruz (2-4, triple#6, HR#8, 2 runs, 1 RBI)-- gave Evan all the runs he would need in the first inning, and played a flawless SS, to boot.

Game ball #3: I almost gave it to Brandt Frazier for his beautiful scoop of the potential game-saving double play ball in the 8th inning, but I'm giving it to Braden Comeaux (2-3, double, 1 run, 1 RBI) for his outstanding 12-pitch AB and clutch RBI single in the 5th inning, as well as his turning of that pivotal 5-5-3 doubleplay to end the threat in the 8th inning.

Today was a must win, and we played one of our best all-around games of the year. Tomorrow, I suspect we're going to need the offense to score at least 5 - 6 runs if we're going to pull the upset and take the weekend series.

Let's make it happen. Go owls!

Kravetz, definitely. Was good to see the scouts monitoring him.
Jefferies, not so much. Allowed 4 base runners in 1 2/3 innings. Gayle was ready to come in. SMiss didn't score in the 8th only because of great defensive play by Comeaux and Frazier.

They say a drawn in infield raises your average by 50 points. That's definitely the case in Rice's score in b5. Beaulaurier tripled, infield pulled in after. Comeaux's hit would have been caught fairly easily by a ss playing regular depth, potentially doubling off Beaulaurier.
Kravetz might be our ace now. Canterino might be a better option for the #2 start in the conference tournament? (assuming we make it - this win should help matters there).

Kravetz was a perfect matchup against the left-handed laden USM lineup. As for Wallner, I don't know why anyone would throw in anything but breaking balls and off-speed pitches. He looked just as bad against Jefferies as he did in multiple ABs against Evan.

two game lead and the tiebreaker vs #9 MTSU at the moment.

The book on Wallner, like a lot of long armed hitters, is actually to bust him inside with fastballs. Obviously, you can’t miss your spot throwing in to him, though.

He’s generally not a bad breaking ball hitter unless he’s having to worry about the fastball.

If I’m counting correctly, our magic number is two against MTSU, Charlotte, and FIU and three against Marshall and UTSA. All teams have four games remaining. FIU and MTSU play today. UTSA and Charlotte play next week. And, of course, Rice plays Marshall next week. We need to finish ahead of three of those five teams.

On Sunday:

MTenn lost to FIU, 10-6.

UTSA lost to FAU, 6-2.

Charlotte lost at FIU, 2-1.

Marshall lost at ODU, 9-8 ... giving up 6 runs in the last two innings.

Records as of 4 pm Sunday 12 May

ODU 14-13 (3 games) 5th (4)
Rice 14-13 (3 games) tied 5th
Marshall 11-15 (3 games) tied 7th -2.5 (1)
UTSA 11-15 (3 games) tied 7th -2.5 (1)
FIU 11-16 (3 games) tied 9th -3 (1)
MTSU 11-16 (3 games) tied 9th -3 (1)

format: team record (games remaining) place (heartbreak number relative to Rice)

(#) is the 'heartbreak number' -- or inverse 'magic number' (i.e. the number or Rice wins/ other team losses means the other team cannot exceed Rice).

edited to add:
Marshall/ODU tied at 8 in bottom of 9th, bases loaded odu, two out.
ODU wins on wild pitch, after an error loads the bases -- good grief what a way to lose

numbers changed to reflect game result
So one more win and we are in is the way I read that.

Rice swept ODU, so the 'heartbreak' number should be three. If Rice and ODU finish tied, then Rice should get the higher seed.
