Quote:Jones submitted the name change request.
Not a friend of the university. He can go **** himself as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, if you are the one who submits the name change request, you lose a lot of respect in my book... no.

He is an Alum of the University, and if it inspires youth in South Memphis to strive like he did, what is the harm (except for the fact that he submitted the petition to name the street after himself, a little strange)? Besides, that street isn't the property of the University, what's the problem?

This should happen.
05-07-2019, 04:50 PM
At least get someone else to submit the request. Sheesh.

I have a lot of respect for him as a solid promoter of the SHC, but to make the request for himself is kinda' odd and strikes as somewhat self-serving.

He may be an alum, but I haven't seen his contributions to the university. Quite the contrary, IMO.
But since this isn't on campus or around LBMS, whatever.
Yeah, weird that he had/chose to submit the petition himself.

WGAS? I’ve lived in Memphis my entire life and have no idea where that street is

Yeah, no joke. Odd.

Whatever, I love the SHC, but Fred makes it more about him than the game.

I think it is a great idea. A great promoter will have a street named after him in a needy but developing area, he will have constant motivation to help that area so his street receives maximum acclaim..
As far as being an alum, I have never seen him at a Tiger football game, maybe he is always with the high-rollers?

Why are we bashing an alum?
05-07-2019, 09:22 PM
Who cares?

Some of you guys sound like Ky message board people. We don’t own the Liberty Bowl. It is our own fault we don’t have an OCS and share in a publicly owned stadium. The SHC is good for the city and represents one of the marque HBCU national events. I don’t have an opinion in the street naming discussion. It is not an issue for me. The attack on him is less than complimentary of our fans.

Can’t see why it would be an issue... other than there are people who simply do not like him.

If it happens then we all need to go over there with spray paint and draw our own lines on the street and drive spikes into the asphalt. Then pour out grease and chicken bones on the road.
While any attraction which brings in out of towners is good for the city economically. The value of the SHC is grossly overestimated.
True, we do not own the LBS, but we are the largest and oldest tenant and we are accountable for a lot of the upkeep cost. Do not forget if the tourism zone does not meet the minimum requirement to make the payment on the upgrades, then the U of M is responsible for making up the shortage up to a certain point each year. SHC is only on the hook for their rental fees and nothing else.

Was waiting for Nascar guy to chime in with his usual degree of racial sensitivity.

When was the last time he left Byhalia and went to Tiger Lane?
