How white is America? According to the 2017 American Community Survey run by the US Census (the most recent data), 72.3% of Americans list their race as "White Only."

Among the 107 metropolitan areas with over 500,000 people, 4 are more than 90% white:
94% - Portland, Maine
91% - Provo, UT
90% - Scranton, PA
90% - Ogden, UT

Among the 40 metropolitan areas with over 1.5 million people, 6 are more than 80% white:
86% - Pittsburgh
82% - Providence
82% - Cincinnati
81% - Denver
81% - Portland, Oregon

The following regions are over 80% white:
88% - Appalachia (Knoxville + Pittsburgh + WV + KY)
87% - Great Plains
82% - New England
81% - Mountain West
80% - Pacific Northwest

I find it fascinating when liberals from Boston (77% white) and Seattle (68% white) talk about how white Trump Country is, when in fact the regions just outside their own cities are the whitest areas in the country. The Midwest as a whole is 78% white, about the same as Boston, and the South is the least white region in the country other than Alaska and Hawai'i.
Where is the country NOT white?

Hawai'i is the only state that is not majority white-only (25%)

Metro areas (MSA) where less than 50% of people identify as white-only:
21% - Honolulu
45% - San Jose
46% - Memphis
47% - Jackson, MS
49% - San Francisco

Wth is an American (the gray areas on the map)?

Essentially, it’s a person unwilling or unable to identify their race. Many in the highlighted areas are mixed Scottish, Irish, German, and often Negroid and/or Native American descent.

I see now. Thanks.

That would be me if they asked. I never put down what race I am in any questionnaire. Always OTHER or refuse to say.

Call me recalcitrant.

That is pretty accurate. There is going to a stronger influence of British Isles generally.

Baltimore is a city, not a metropolitan area. The Baltimore metro is 60% white.

Most US cities don't include very many of their region's residential neighborhoods (with a few exceptions like San Diego, Columbus, and Phoenix). The "City of Baltimore" is the commercial center and 15% of the neighborhoods of the people who work and play in the commercial center.

What you're saying is that there's plenty of non-white NEIGHBORHOODS in the USA, and I'd agree.

But if you go to a Baltimore Ravens game, Fed Hill, or an office building in the Inner Harbor.... you'll find that it's overwhelmingly white.

Actually, that map measures ancestry, not race.

The Census Bureau measures Ancestry, Race, and Ethnicity as 3 independent categories.

Ancestry is Irish, Canadian, Nigerian, etc - it's where your ancestors are from. A person with ancestry of "South African" could be a member of almost any race.

There's only 6 Race categories in the Census:
"American Indian and Alaska Native"
Asian
Black
"Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander"
White
"Some other race" - often picked by Hispanic people with Native American ancestry, as well as minor groups like Australian Aborigines

That's it (although they allow you to pick multiple boxes).

Ethnicity is either "Hispanic/Latino" or "Not Hispanic/Latino"

I agree. The Census' categories of ancestry and race are really social constructs. Both are more similar to the definition of ethnicity (which is more about tribe and culture than genetics). In social terms, we usually group everyone who's less than 5% into the "other" category. And we do ridiculous things like grouping Indians and Chinese together because hey, their ancestors were on the same continent.

The scientific differences between the races are ignored when classifying people this way. For example, Pygmies are significantly shorter than the other ethnicities, and Jewish people are more likely to have Crohn's disease. We would gain something if the Census Bureau also focused on genetic ancestry.

But the Census Bureau seems to care more about the social aspect of race than the scientific one. They're probably scared off because most of the studies on race are done by racists. They don't realize that the psuedoscience only takes over when the real science is lacking - and we'd need much more accurate data to actually do much real science on race.
Where are they?...Mostly concentrated where it is cold and damp.
