So Cronin was like their 50th choice?
Sounds like it was Cronin by default after every other coach in the country passed on it.
Can you blame them?

Southern CA was the best place in the world to live... 40 years ago. 30 years ago it was good. 20 years ago it was ok. Now it's halfway to Mexico as far as quality of life.

They still have wealthy institutions from being the best economy in the world from 1930-1999. But at this point they're a mere 40 years behind Cleveland in their decline.
Mick's a pretty determined guy. I think he will succeed there. We shall see.

+1. I also think he's going to be recharged with this change. I think he fell into a pattern here of what he could do to have us consistently at the top of this league and I think this new challenge will be good for him. P12 has been down for a long time; I see no reason he can't have them consistently in the top 2 of that league like he has here.

The only concern I have is did they learn from running off Ben Howland? Because I don't think that UCLA can get back to the level of UNC, Kentucky, etc.
Hello?... This is Mick... wait a sec, this is who?... Say what???... Really?... come on... Huggins, I know it's you! ... oh yeah, I guess that IS a California area code...
Quote:Chief among them was Dixon, whose Horned Frogs were playing in the National Invitation Tournament in the days before the Final Four. Cronin was also near the top of UCLA’s list and harbored such strong interest in the job that he agreed to go on standby as the school pursued other coaches.

:shrug
The part I found interesting:

Great article. Thanks for the post.

I wonder if Bohn read it? A much better way to search for a coach instead of a short conversation in the hallway with Savino, and a Sunday phone call with Brannen. And we wonder why we struggle to take the next step in the NCAA tournament, bowl game invites, and conference affiliations.

Wow. Really wanted to lay a good ole blanket statement on California. Glad you found an opening.

Yea man. Bohn's coaching hires have been a disaster. Fickell, goggins, Clark- heard. Might as well fold the athletic department.

Yep, Ucla's recent string of great hires is clearly the model. LOL

Sorry, I lived there for the past 3 years. I honestly can't see why anyone would ever voluntarily choose to live there if they have outside options.

Don't forget the embarrassing trajectory of our Olympic Sports. It's awful.

You serious, Clark?

Many reports have stated that multiple candidates were considered / interviewed during the week-long search and that Brannen's name kept coming out on top in comparison to others.

It's laughable that you positively compare UCLA's hiring process to UC's. UCLA hasn't found success over its last several hires (in several sports) and has become a Tier II destination.

The clearest difference is that UC got the guy on the top of their list, and UCLA quite literally got the guy that they admitted to was on the very bottom of theirs.

What? 03-lmfao This is just so wrong on so many levels, I don't know where to begin.

Yup... The only thing that got people off laughing about the UCLA hiring...disaster..."hiring process" was the dumpster fire that erupted at Saint John's. But the UCLA debacle went on-and-on-and-on for what...three weeks?...even as Alford found another job at Nevada. It was a string of public rejections. I wondered if Mick was really going to take the job at the end because it certainly had to hurt him as well as UCLA. The whole world knows that UCLA wanted Jaime Dixon...not Mick Cronin.

There's no way in hell I want a story like that playing out at UC.
