new coach. I guess they finally got the hint Beard wasn't coming, Buzz wanted to be at A & M, Kelvin Sampson said no, and Marshall said no thanks. For the 5th choice he seems like a good hire. Puts Arkansas back into the SEC conversation, but I doubt he is better then Calipari, Howland, Pearle, Buzz, White, and maybe even Kermit.
Sampson "used" Arkansas to double his salary at Houston. I think Marshall is living pretty well on 3.5 million in Wichita, Kansas. Why deal with crazy hog fans when he is revered in Wichita. If not for Wichita State's move from the MVC to the AAC, I think he would have been much more interested. Dominating a weak conference was getting old, the AAC provides a renewed challenge for him.
As the is norm, local media will deny that Sampson or Marshall were ever offered the job. They will likely admit that Coach Beard was the number one target. I already heard Trey Schapp on the radio saying that "Chris Beard would already by the razorback coach" if the ref didn't miss the out of bounds play against Gonzaga and Texas Tech lost that game. I guess you can say whatever you want at this point.
Musselman is as good a coach as any sane fan of the Razorbacks could hope for. It’s not the big name they expected but it’s not 1995. When you are irrelevant for almost a quarter of a century I would say He’s a great hire.

I agree. I realize many of the posters on Hogville do not fall in the "sane" category, but many believed they could get Chris Beard if they gave him enough money. They also threw out names like Bill Self, Billy Donovan, and Brad Stephens along with Buzz Williams, Marshall, Sampson, Jamie Dixon and Lon Kruger. Maybe a lot of them are older folks who are still living in the past. My 28 year old son was like "Why would Chris Beard (or fill in the blank) want to go to Arkansas?". He went to school at Kansas and certainly doesn't think of UAF as a basketball powerhouse or a destination job. Musselman certainly is a step up from Stan Heath and John Pelphrey (they were both hired when most still viewed UAF as a destination job) and he may also be a step-up from Mike Anderson. But the whole SEC has really improved the quality of their coaches- I forgot to mention Tom Crean earlier, who may well take Georgia to a higher level. Nate Oates, at Alabama, certainly looks like he could be a top notch coach considering what he did at Buffalo. Stackhouse is the big question mark after being hired by Vandy. Considering, how ex-NBA guys have done here and at UCA, I have my doubts how he will do at Vandy. But, he could end up being a pleasant surprise.
