Kenny Goins had a few MAC offers out of high school and chose to bet on himself out of high school and now has hit one of the most iconic shots in recent memory for the Spartans in their victory over Duke. Forecast for Saturday is Tear Gas in East Lansing.
The Goins story reminds me of the Laveon Bell story who was committed to EMU before his HS Principal called MSU and asked someone to take a look at him again... the rest is history.
Baseball team swept again by Miami (ohio). not good.
Tigers gain a split north of the border in a series between two teams that will flirt with 100 losses.
Final four brings together a large college coaches convention and will be interesting to see if any white smoke appears from the Convo or US Bank stadium in Minnesoda.
We won our lawsuitish to keep dropping softball to potentially add women's LAX which I assume would recruit mostly out of state players and be able to charge out of state tuition to players that come as walk-ons. Seems strange and about a decade behind in the LAX game IMO.

LAX does seem like an odd add here, but I wouldnt say they are behind the game in adding it. CMU was added in 2016 I believe, Kent State this year, and Akron is set to add a team in 2020. That shows me that at our level of competition we may be right on par with adding.

Outside of those teams, there are no other MAC affiliated schools that have womens LAX. Locally UD also has a womens LAX squad (as well as some of the larger schools in our state of course)

I may be speaking over my pay grade (which is nil for college or pro sports), but I assume LAX was chosen for a number of reasons:

1). LAX can be played on a soccer field. Correct? If so, no new expense of upkeeping an expensive field.

2). Didn't softball have its own field to maintain?

3). LAX seems to be a cheaper sport to field. I know nothing about women's softball but does it share some of the same problem as baseball for a Midwestern sport. I don't know how much softball teams travel in late winter/early spring.

4). Other MAC schools have it so it isn't a frivolous sport.

5). This is a tangent, but didn't the NCAA (or someone) try to get cheerleading declared a sport? IF so, was the real motivation many fold, e.g., gender equity and partial athletic scholarships?
You are correct on Goins. He passed up mid-major scholarship offers and just lived his dream after going to State as a walk-on.

The operative words are: "Dream" and "outlier". Dream is obvious and 'outlier' indicates that what he experienced is very uncommon. The exception to the rule...

I always thought Dantonio/MSU poached Bell from Bowling Green after he signed with them - interesting.

I like fanfrompowellspub operative words........"he chose to bet on himself"

Kudos to him. Let's go Spartans!

It is hard to disagree with someone who 'bets on himself' and wins.

I assume he was lucky enough to have parents (or maybe student loans) to have the option of being a walk-on.

One or two years as a walk-on at a school, even a public school like MSU, isn't cheap.

I just heard on the radio that he is still in debt to the school. Think like 17k.

Very different for a collegiate athlete to bet on themselves going and playing at a big school as a walk on or non scholarship player than what say Max Scherzer did a few years ago, betting on himself and not signing an extension and getting a massive paid day.

Yes, here is a Tweet on same. Yes, his parents went in debt for 17K (according to the Tweet).

Not all high school seniors have that option (e.g., mom and dad would rather have their son at a MAC school and a new car in their driveway).

And what’s his non-basketball payoff?

He’s not going pro.

The value of his degree isn’t necessarily worth any more than a MAC school. And now his family has extra debt to deal with.

That’s a steep price for some nice college memories.
Tim Bond, in the G League, plays Tuesday on ESPN-U.

I don't think Bell ever committed to EMU. I think EMU was Bell's first offer.

Yes, softball, at least the CMU variety, looks an awful, awful, awful lot like baseball.

Check out their schedule and where they traveled this season:

Great point. I’m always stunned whenever players turn down scholarships to be walk-ons. Kudos to Goins for earning a scholarship and having an amazing moment. But those loans are annoying to pay off (I know from experience).

EMU no longer charges out of state tuition. Change made in part to make scholarships 'cheaper' for the athletic department. (Tuition reimbursement to the college for full-ride students is fake money. Walk-ons paying tuition=real money.)
@holybovine...

I'm not sure you get it. MSU is a better school academically and by the perception of corporate recruiters -- he'll get a job making 50k right out of school if he doesn't play basketball. His story, grit, perseverance alone has taught him a great deal and a story he can tell during his interviews -- wherever he goes. He was coached by Tom Izzo. He's got a few connections. He's developed personally and professionally. 17k is absolutely nothing for playing D1 at a bigten school.

You overrate the value of an undergraduate MSU degree. Greatly.

It's a umich degree but it's also not an eastern degree. And, playing for a well known coach will get you places much more than Rob Murphy (unless you're a PF from Kent State).

And lets once again remind everyone that Izzo and Murphy are more than 75 miles apart. In everything.
