That’s what the announcers are currently screaming as American International, in its first ever NCAA appearance, stuns the #1 team in the nation.

The other one that rivals this is Holy Cross over #1 Minnesota in 2006.

Holy Cross kinda came out of nowhere as I recall, although I may not recall correctly since it was over a decade ago. St. Cloud had this happen to them last year.

I think both have their own significance - AIC as a perennial doormat being good for the first time basically ever, and Holy Cross is the one who blew up the myth of the invincible 1 seed. Tough to split between the two, but this is a huge milestone for the Yellow Jackets.

Although another song that came out a few months later might fit better. Especially if there are any brothers on the AI team. " Its all right and its comin on, we got to get er right back to where we started from, ..."
Nothing will top RIT making it to the Frozen Four. RIT isn't allowed to offer scholarships. All of the other D3's and D2's playing D1 hockey are grandfathered. Newbs like RIT can't offer scholarships.

Atlantic Hockey has a habit of pulling these upsets every so often. Heck, RIT had a run to the Frozen Four.

Union College is actually enough of a newb not to be grandfathered in either and they won it all a handful of years after that. Although they seem to give a lot of diversity scholarships to Canadians. I suppose people expect a better performance out of ECAC, but that wasn’t inevitable, there was definitely a time when people thought the Big Ten, NCHC, and Hockey East were gonna shut out the others. Hockey East was pretty surprised when they realized that Quinnipiac wasn’t just waiting around to be invited, they actually rather like playing against Yale and all the other academic schools they’ve got now.

Maxine Nightingale (one hit wonder).
I owned that 45RPM record (probably still do somewhere...)

Slapshot was a great movie. Miracles and Get er right back are two of my favorite songs.
I just saw this article. It came out the day before AIC upset St. Cloud. Well deserved honor.

AIC's Lang Named College Hockey News Coach of the Year

American International's Eric Lang has been named College Hockey News Coach of the Year for 2018-19. Lang is the first coach from Atlantic Hockey to win the honor. The Yellow Jackets are set to play their first-ever NCAA Tournament game this weekend, against St. Cloud State, coming off a season of other firsts. In just his third season at the helm, Lang led AIC to its first winning record as a full-fledged Division I team, its first Atlantic Hockey regular-season championship, and first Atlantic Hockey tournament championship. AIC earned the latter by winning two overtime games in the semifinals and finals last week in Buffalo.

In ice hockey, the talent pool has grown enormously (Especially in the USA and in Europe), while the number of programs (and roster spots) hasn't grown much, due to Title IX interpretations and cost limitations.

As a result, there are plenty more good players on all of the tournament teams, and the competitive distance between a #16 and #1 is far smaller than in other NCAA sports. #16 seeds are no longer overlooked, as they can win.
AIU is D2 NE 10 where Merrimack and Bentley are at.

This thread is about American International College. Who is AIU?
AIC HC Eric Lang's name is starting to come up in the coaching searches of other schools, ex. St. Lawrence.

Because Lang is an AIC alum, I'm sure he has a deep passion to see his alma mater succeed. But other schools have fatter checkbooks.
Will AIC be able to build on this past season? The college marketplace around AIC is very crowded with similar schools. Being good in D1 hockey could set AIC apart as they compete for tuition paying students.
How did Air Force wind up in the same conference as AIC and not in a more western based conference?
I assumed it is because Army is in the Atlantic Conference. (Navy has club hockey.)

I've read that the NCHC was interested in AFA (but that might be fan speculation). Last season AFA played both Denver and Colorado College of the NCHC and lost by a combined score of 2-10. That might be the real reason they travel to the east coast to play small private schools.

That's a lot of travel involved for AFA and the other members of the AHC. I think the AHC's pick up some OOC games through the midwest on the trip to Colo.

What?

Yes, AFA wanted to be in Army's conference. They'd be okay in the WCHA competitively (ahead of UAH and the Alaskas for sure, they always competed well with Bemidji).

No, no one picks up a non-conference game on the way to Colorado. That would involve a second flight, and a midweek game that schools don't generally go out of their way to play. Not everyone has to go to Colorado every year, and it is just one trip per year. It is not financially crippling.

AFA flies out east much more often, but that's less of a big deal when you are, you know, the air force.

Yep, you're right. I scrolled through the AHC composite schedule. I was trying a little too hard to justify the 4000 mile round trip between Boston and Colo Springs.

Tix from Boston and NYC are around $250 RT to Denver. In Pittsburgh you pay $500. I suspect you get a group discount when you buy 3 dozen tickets at a time. Still, it's got to cost Robt Morris $20,000 in travel, hotel, meals, bus to/from Denver, etc. (I've often wondered, how do they ship the hockey gear when they're flying? Do they put their skates in their luggage and the goalie mask in the carry-on bag? As much as airlines charge for an extra luggage, I wonder how much all the goalie equipment costs? Does the equipment manager drive a U-Haul truck from Boston- that's three 10-hour days each way? Do they hire a trucking company?)

I wonder if the AFA kicks in a little to help with the cost? Maybe fly them in on an Air National Guard tanker that just happens to be on a training mission to Colo Springs? Let them sleep in empty dorm rooms and have breakfast with the cadets? (that would actually be kind of interesting vs. just a random Holiday Inn Express.) Anyone know anything about this?

St Lawrence is where we got Carvel from (he was an alum there). The same progression we see in football and basketball can apply here for sure.

I'd personally love for AIC to become a thing out in western MA, especially if UMass can keep it going. Shift the power from Boston to the western half of the state (that not so secretly hates Boston)...sounds fun to me.
