Metro State Rejects D1 WAC

WAC officials need to look at another Colorado school.
WOW.
I’m not sure the WAC needs to find schools rather than continue to be a gateway conference for Western-ish non-Division I schools to make the jump and be the home of unwanted Western-ish schools. There’s a place for it and it fits it’s place. It sure is a far cry from the 1990s and before.
You know, I wonder if some of the newer D1 schools wind up having some buyer's remorse in their move-up's because of the shifting landscape of student athlete payment in the D1 sphere.

Like, I know we see some schools who might not be positioned well to sustain D1 athletics. Could there be a LIFO element, too?
Interesting that athletics is still largely identified as Metro State while the school has been going by MSU Denver. You'd think athletics would want to lean into the Denver aspect too. Maybe it's fallout from U of Denver opposing an attempt by MSU to change its name to Denver State.

I do think the larger public schools could find a home in D1. Big Sky and Southland would need football members if the next raid comes in FBS. MWC would lose some schools, and could get some Big Sky schools to move. WAC could be home for D2 schools move up from GNAC, RMAC and Lone Star. Lone Star is bloated at 20 and UT-Dallas is looking to move up. Those three conferences and the public California schools have schools with more than 10,000 in enrollment.
This is old news and it should not come as a surprise. It's not as if someone wasn't trying to tell you they would stay D2.

The Lone Star will have only 19 members next year but it doesn't matter anyway because D2 conferences do not generate revenue for its members like it is done in D1. It is also not uncommon to have larger conferences in D2. The PSAC will have 18 again next year, the NSIC and RMAC have 16, the GLVC will return to 16 next year, and the GLIAC, the GSC, and the NE10 previously had 16 members.

MEAC gains one in Frostburg State, but could lose Wheeling Jesuit since they are getting closer to be closing.

Chicago State and UMKC could be gone tomorrow. I knew Metro State would have issues moving up because you already have 4 D1 schools in the area already.
Probably need to focus on D2 football schools.
I wonder if they talked to Azusa Pacific about interest in moving up?
And I have not heard any talk here in Amarillo about WTAMU looking to move up.

I wonder if the Montana’s would allow MSU-Billings to move up.

MSU-Billings was thinking of adding football as well.

That's the route they definitely should take. Tarleton St., Colorado Mesa, Colorado Mines, West Texas AM, Texas AM/CC, Azusa Pacific.

Central Washington, CSU-Pueblo, Angelo State and Midwestern State I would throw in as well. Not sure if Mines could move up. They are very small.

Think they need to merge with the Summit instead of turning into the dregs of Div. I.

Not so sure you'd find the desire form either league to merge and lose an automatic NCAA bid.

The 4 Dakota schools would likely jump that ship. The rest may not have a choice in the matter.

West: Seattle, California Baptist, Grand Canyon, Utah Valley, Dixie St, New Mexico St, Texas - Rio Grande Valley
East: Oral Roberts, Denver, Nebraska - Omaha, Missouri - Kansas City, Western Illinois, Chicago St, Purdue - Fort Wayne

If the 4 Dakota schools stayed, shift them to the East and Denver and Oral Roberts to the West.

Should also take a look at Southern Washington, CSU-San Junipero, UC Neptune, MidState Tech, and UT South Fork

Everyone knows that MidState Tech is in financial trouble, and UT South Fork is scandal plagued. Try to be at least a BIT realistic.

Not correct. The WAC has nine basketball members, 10 schools playing baseball and 12 in men's soccer. They need an additional member in the west to get to 10 basketball schools. The Summit has nine basketball schools, six baseball schools and six in men's soccer. The WAC is better in all three sports. They are not the "dregs of Div. I."

The west is not going to give up an auto bid conference. Just not going to happen. The Summit is a Dakota conference. That actually gives them a decent foundation. They will probably need to look at a D2 addition at some point. They are thin in baseball and men's soccer.

The Metro State rejection is old news. It was not a good fit for either Metro State or the WAC. Metro State was never really a strong candidate, unless they were willing to spend a lot of money that they don't have.

Must be the first time in the history of CSNbbs that David has named a school that he thinks should not be in Division I.
