14,000 seats! What kind of nonsense is that? Are the 1st Round games generally SOLD OUT? So Savage Arena or The Huntington Center will never be used. What a shame.
Dumbest article ever. Blade recycles this every year. No chance. Yawn

Does HS Basketball play any tournaments in the Huntington center?
When I went in Columbus, there were no marquee teams. the highest drawing team was West Virginia, or maybe Dayton. And it was sold out.

Yep...and this year it was sold out about two months before the games were even announced, what with MSU, Michigan, UK, Tennessee, and Purdue all being projected and protected seeds and likely to end up there.
IMO, the HC was built way too small...
Even Gerken said that the sweet spot for seating capacity would have been 10,0000, so they settled for under 8,000...
A perfect size might have been 12,000 seats with a chance for tourney teams and possibly the MAC woman’s tournament to be brought back.
Toledo did not think outside the box on this one. 07-coffee3[/align]

I kind of agree. And kind of dont. I dont know. 12k would be nice, but if that was the case, not much stuff would sell out in there... Concerts, wwe, etc are already not selling out. I guess they may be able to get bigger acts? Mens tourny would be a slight possibility. Boise got it last year, I cant imagine that arena is much bigger. Womens tourny is hosted by top seeds now. But again, would definitely open the door for other events.
When Centennial/Savage was in the planning stages the initial drawings and discussion was for an 11,000 seat capacity. The building was to be oval shaped with a translucent roof. At the time either fundraising and/or interest rates and financing became an issue and the current format was used.

Even with that facility
Even with that facility we would not be able to host the NCAA today. Maybe women but not men. Probably would be causing us to cover the upper level seats like EMU? Toledo is just not a large enough market. Huntington at 10K might have changed things but probably not.

Both UT and BG have hosted first round games for the Women's NCAA Tournament in the recent past and with hosting a men's first round being very unlikely with or without the once proposed new arena, that city arena would not have added anything there. Some of the shakers and movers of the city at that time were trying to persuade (pressure?) the University to buy into a grandiose city plan and make that off campus site the home for the UT basketball teams (and help fund the project of course). For awhile I was afraid that the University administration might cave in to show that they were "a good citizen of the community" but thank goodness in the end they refused and opted to renovate Savage instead----so now we have the Savage/Fetterman complex which is a very nice facility and students (and fans) can easily attend the games.

I always thought an arena sized for football should have been built where the old Jeep plant was. It would have been perfect right along the expressway with great access and great visibility. It could have been large enough to host an arena football team and higher profile events and shows. But, I understand that the city had been desperately trying to get an arena built for years and when a sliver of a window of opportunity to do it opened, they jumped through it. Oh well, it is what it is.
Too many in Toledo waste a lot of energy trying to be just like other cities instead of celebrating who they are. Just another example

I don't think those other cities would be worth imitating if they were stagnant. A desire to add value doesn't preclude celebrating the city. It makes the city worth celebrating.
