I’m not in a place where I can check, but is the Las Vegas invitational no longer a thing?

The Vegas 16 was only around in 2016. Been dead since.
California Baptist announced they are going to one or the other (must have had invites from both). Will have info next week.

CBU finishes their 1st season of d1 transition with a winning record: currently 16-13 with one game left on Saturday.
They are not eligible for the WAC tourney because of their transition to d1. But they're going to the post-season.

The CBI or CIT would be more popular if they turned themselves into a Vegas 16 type tournament.

That's what the organizers of the Vegas 16 thought and ... 05-deadhorse
These tourneys are pretty much a joke but I think they still serve some benefits for younger teams or schools that would never sniff at the NCAA or even the NIT

That’s a great use of the C-level tournaments, good on them for reaching out!

Agree, you can get some extra practice and game time in. If you get a pretty high seed, and can sell tix, you will likely break even or even make a couple of bucks. If you don't lose money and gain tournie type experience it is a good deal.

Good for them.

IIRC, the CBI is pay-to-play, or at least pay to host. I'm not sure about the CIT. If CBU is willing to pony up to participate, more power to them. It also helps to prove they are willing to invest to be a quality D-I program.
They are really good for mid major and low major teams that are just a year away from breaking thru. Those types of teams don't get that many chances at the post season. The NIT is mostly filled with auto bids and major conference teams.

Not to mention, there are always seniors who have been around 4 or 5 years, maybe mostly been in losing teams, and when they do have a good year finally, it may not be enough for the ncaa tourney, but at these tourneys give them something fun to end with. It's really all about the players and the fans.

I know if UVU, Weber State, Southern Utah, or Dixie State were in, I'd consider.

The organizers of the Vegas 16 made many mistakes.

1. Should have had a decent balance of west coast/midwest/east coast teams instead of a bunch of eastern teams and UC Santa Barbara.
2. Vegas 16 was on a Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday format instead of a Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday format that would work hypothetically.
3. It wasn't even the Vegas 16, if there was 16 teams it may have been a more successful tournament, they should have poached the CBI/CIT teams.

The only mistake they made was not giving the schools money to play.
It can work still and the format was great but to break through you need it to be financially worthwhile for the schools...even if you take a loss in the first couple of years.
The Vegas 16 struck out on high major teams

I believe they did Mon thru Wednesday to keep costs down for the fans

They went for quality over quantity

Shame they didn’t make it.
Loyola Chicago joins Campbell as NIT autobids

I'm not sure Monday-Wednesday is that helpful, hotels are slightly cheaper but it's not like rooms are terribly priced in Vegas.

If they were trying to keep costs down:

Saturday (16 teams / 8 games)
Sunday (8 teams / 4 games)
Monday (4 teams / 2 games)
Tuesday (2 teams / 1 game, maybe a 3rd place game)

I don't think the league would need high major teams necessarily to be successful, but if they could get some teams from MWC, WCC, CUSA, WAC, MVC, MAC, CAA, maybe even American etc it would be a decent tournament.
