If I am correct, the only way UT would have gone to the NIT would have been if they were the overall winner of the won-lost record heading into the MAC tourney and lost in the finals? Or, if they win the west and lose in the finals, do they go to the NIT?

Does UB become a bubble team if they lose in the 2nd round of the MAC tourney. On a neutral court, anything can happen.

There isn't an only way scenario... The only way to get an "automatic bid" is win the conference regular season.

It's an invitation tourney so we can get invited as an at large if they want us. I think we'd be close but they usually take power league teams and first 8 out caliber mid majors. With an RPI of 37 we were a 6 seed at 3 seed SoMiss in 2013... our RPI is similar now. We don't have lots of wiggle room. Technically though... They can invite WMU if they want to. Having a future NBA player would be a reason to do something like that. Morehead State has a very good player who will make them attractive to the NIT.
The goal is making "The Dance" or whatever they call it. So it seems.

Unless Toledo wins the MAC, they probably get a bid to some tourney, maybe NIT, maybe not, but one of them; if they don't crap down their leg in the next couple of weeks.

Let's go with the hypothetical; the Midnight Blue and Gold win the MAC (beating Buffalo in the final) and get, maybe, a 14 seed. Then get smoked no matter who they play (5 seed?).

I would take a trip to a BS tourney to give our guys playing time in hope of making them better in the future.

This is a nice team, but not good enough. Continue to build for the future.

We are the 8th or 9th best league... A 25 win team who knocked off a top 25 ranked UB wouldn't be a 14 seed. Our net would rival at large squads. Assuming we don't lose our next four.... Then somehow get hot and win the MAC as a 7 seed that is. I'd guess Toledo is an 11 at the best. 13 at the worst.
I would never take a trip to a BS tourney over the Big Dance. We are here to get to the Big Dance, anything else is mediocrity.

If we had made the Big Dance a few times in the last decade, I'd say let's build some playing time, but it's been over 3 decades.

Looking at some of last years brackets and results:

# 14 Bucknell lost to #3 MSU 78-82
#14 Montana lost to # 3 Michigan 47-61
#13 UNC-Greensboro lost to # 4 Gonzaga 64-68

and of course the inconceivable happen, #16 U. MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY downed # 1 Virginia 74-54. And in case anyone was wondering what final 4 Loyola of Chi was seeded when they made their run? answer: #11
