There does seem to be some kind of jealousy among some coaches where Penny is concerned. As if he's not playing by "the rules" of what it takes to be a D1 coach. Paying dues, etc. Meh. It's just great to see the Tigers making headlines again. Been a long time since that's happened, and it's due to Penny. He's been better than advertised, in my opinion.
Just wait until we're ranked in the top 10 next season. The hate, anger, and left handed compliments will be coming from every direction!
In general, Memphis responds well to the “us vs. the world “ mentality.

Absolutely. Fans or coaches or talking heads commenting negatively about Penny will do nothing but bring the fan base closer together and provide even stronger support for Penny and the basketball program. Let them keep talking...
It's refreshing to see how candid Penny is, especially after Pastner's canned thoughts. He is only expressing what we all know to be true, most NCAA coaches are insecure because they are living well off of the backs of elite athletes (mostly young black boys) and it is questionable how much coaching has to do with the success of basketball teams these days.
Not to say coaching is useless, but the way the game is played today, talent and athleticism take over most games rather than skill, game plan and discipline. Coaching today is more about recruiting elite talent, managing relationships and PR, rather than X's and O's. Penny has the gravitas and credibility to get elite players to buy in to the team concept (look at what he is doing with Antwan Jones). That is the true coaching skill today.
John Wooden would fall flat today, similarly to what Tubby has done. In today's game, recruiting elite talent and managing the relationships and egos is about 80% of the job, with the rest split between actually game coaching and PR. Penny is doing an excellent job with this dynamic, and at the same time exposing many coaches for the frauds many of them really are. And they don't like it one bit. No way was Memphis Supposed to get the no. 1 player and the top 5 recruiting class. Penny is exposing the game, and the coaches are coming for him.
