lol I remember that was Jonah's earliest reaction.....To his credit , he did a 180 not long after that article.

It was strange that so many fans had that initial take on the Penny Plan. To me, hiring Penny ASAP seemed like a nobrainer. Some folks changed their minds after they saw Penny's dedication, work ethic and recruiting results in action...But a few have never budged in their initial anti-P positions. They don't hide it well, either. lol

I was lukewarm to his hire when it first broke as a real option. I had doubts about the extent of his work ethic, media relation skills, and hiring quality assistant coaches. However, I warmed up in a hurry and was fully on board and excited about his hire. Subsequent events proved my concerns without merit.

We had to endure 2 years of Tubby first. Penny wasn't coaching the No.1 recruit then either and had only one season in high school/AAU. He wasn't ready. I was of the opinion that it was a bad idea as well when he was hired. He turned all most of the negative Nellies into positive Pauls within the first month here. He can recruit, has a tremendous staff, works hard, does cool stuff and is a decent bench coach. He's also just getting started.
If you put something on the internet its there forever.

Like the controversial Tweets that athletes throw out there in high school that turn up 6-8 years later when they are pros.

Nobody ever seems to go dig up crap on failed athletes, lol.

I agree.

I wanted Penny going back to year 5 of the Pastner era. I got blasted on this board, image that.
As I recall the rumors and desire for Greg Marshall were running pretty high.

Not Surprising that Jonah wrote this:

"The Memphis job isn't as attractive as it once was"

He seems to think the worst of the University of Memphis for some reason.

Yes, that’s true.

Agree with this completely. Penny timing was perfect. He wasn’t ready before.

I hate to say "Me Too", I'll take "As I". I can say a notable fan blasted me.

I would say most people of his age group believed that same thing...

Keep in mind, by the time they were old enough to really understand Memphis basketball we had the clown show as a coach.
It’s so great for all of us to be discussing this from a satisfying position. Lol
We have a team again! I love teams.

Honestly, it makes little difference who wanted want when. All Tiger fans gotta be so bleedin happy with what we got and the trajectory of our program. We are Memphis!

Our future’s so bright we gotta wear shades.

Shiat...maybe we should let ole TC back up in the DF. lol
.
People who became Tiger fans during Calipari are only now beginning to understand MEMPHIS basketball.

Jonah is far from my favorite Tiger reporter/writer over the years. As active Tigers reporters go, I rate him ahead of anyone left at the CA, but behind his columnist boss at the DM and behind the guys at the Athletic.

His take in 2016 wasn't a fringe or "hater" opinion. Many felt the time wasn't right then.

At the same time, the arguments he made against Penny in 2016 were the same arguments some made in 2018. However, by then it had become obvious to most of us that those arguments were less important or risks worth taking.
yall remember when he got all butthurt because someone posted a public pic of him and his girlfriend about a year ago?

good times

I dunno. I thought it was super nice of him to stand up for his GF.
Seems like that would be nice.

I jumped into a fist fight once upon a time to protect my lil geeky boycousin--the kind of science buff with cokebottle glasses. And it was the worst bully in the whole school who picked the fight...meaner bigger dumber and crazier than anybody. Everyone was scared shitless of that dude. NO amount of paddling from the principal had made a dent.

lol I didn't even know how to make a proper fist--apparently my thumb was placed wrong.

good times
