The UC Student government wants to change the lyrics to "Cheer Cincinnati" to be more gender neutral. Currently the lyrics read:

Cheer Cincinnati, Cincy will win
Fight to the Finish, never give in (rah rah rah)
You do your best boys, we'll do the rest boys,

Onward to Victory!

I'm not entirely sure but I think the song has been around since the 1950s-- maybe earlier.
Surprised student government knows the fight song lyrics.
About 15 years ago they subbed out boys for team on some of info they giving out to students. Actually it is an easy fix. When the ladies are playing sub girls/ladies for boys.

I really hope student government is smart enough to realize the easy fix. Cats could easily work as well.

Does the pep band evem suit up for the girls games? There is probably more of them than people in the stands at those games.

Maybe that actually let the band play during the women’s games. I miss the days when the pep band played during warmups, timeouts, and right before tip. Men’s basketball presentation has basically killed off the pep band and that is a bad thing. The student section is less engaged because the pep band and rallycats don’t lead the craziness like they did during those Huggins years.
People make a huge deal out of this kind of thing. Frankly I don't care either way. I'm not bothered by the use of "boys" in the song, but making a small change doesn't sound like much of an issue either.

Could easily just say:
You do your best and
We'll do the rest

and the song would still work. I'm sure there are other ways. I get why it's being discussed. I don't think people see it as a big deal the way it is now, but it wouldn't hurt to make it more inclusive either.

You do your best non-offensive gender neutrals, we'll do the rest non-offensive gender neutrals,
Onward to victory !

Sub in Cats. I believe the original lyrics come from cheer for old amherst. UC just uses the chorus. I believe the trombone cheer part was added in late 70’s and early 80’s and is based off of the trumpet cheer portion of Texas Fight.

The song itself predates the Bearcat nickname I believe and like Red and Black had no mention of Bearcats or Cats in the original lyrics.

Most early UC songs mention McMicken, Cincy, Cincinnati, UC, red, black, and the hieligan cheer.

Thanks for the history lesson on the song. Not surprised changes have been made to the song in the past.

I was looking up some stuff on this the other day, and I read an article in the Enquirer from 4 years ago where a 80 year old band alum said he still remembered how to play the song he played so frequently while in college.

It should be noted that prior to becoming the Bearcats, and even a couple decades after, if you read the Cincinnatian Yearbook's the team is often referred to as "The Boys" or "Coach (fill in the blank) Boys". IMHO this may be a reason as to why the lyrics are written as they are.
when i think of the word fight, i can't turn my head quick enough away from my thoughts. countless indigenous and their innocence, their slaughter. oh and how the band played on

i suggest calling it a cheer song
First they want to get rid of Mic and Mac and now they're changing the fight song? Does these kids ever go to class?
What women's sporting events do they even play this other than maybe bball?

How dare you propose “cheer”. Cheer is an insult to all alcoholic beverages that have clanked together for the last 5000 years to that word without any consideration to how they feel about it. Just “song”
And what's this about victory? Shouldn't everyone just get a participation ribbon?

They want to change the name of McMicken Hall because Charles McMicken once owned slaves.
I also think cheering at events should be ended as it creates a hostile and threatening environment. No more clapping either but rather use "jazz hands" or "one handed clapping".

Substitute LGBTQFH[/font] for boys.

God it must be terrible to go through life offended by almost everything.
When are we going to replace those toxic football helmets with proper pink ****** hats.
