Austin FC is coming to MLS by 2021 (team #27 if you're keeping count). I think they may have plans for a new stadium but I didn't click enough links to find out that part of the story.

I am amused to see that in two years, we will almost have as many professional men's soccer teams in Texas (3 - Houston, Dallas and Austin) as we have men's collegiate programs (4). I would be stunned if anyone here knew what 4 schools have D1 soccer in Texas without looking it up (maybe you know if you're a recruit or have a family friend who has a recruit). But I'll save you the trouble - the four schools are SMU, HBU, Incarnate Word and UT-RGV.

Surely, some enterprising college in Texas might consider adding men's soccer now?

Adding a men's sport? Not going to happen.

Add a women’s sport as well, say softball.

Oh wait, that would require $$$.

Yes, it would, including the funds to build a softball field.

How much can the university put you down for?

...
Yes, there will be a new 20,000 seat stadium in north Austin near "The Domain" which is rapidly becoming Austin's second downtown. The franchise owner will fund the stadium while (I think) the city will retain ownership of the land with some sort of long-term lease agreement.

<edit> Here's a link for more information about the stadium deal: http://www.fox7austin.com/news/local-new...-next-year
The reactionary Austin Nimby Council tried hard to kill it, along with the Circuit of the Americas owner, but failed. It ended up being really weird where we are getting essentially an expansion team with the Columbus Crew's old franchise license. And the Crew's new owners are getting a new franchise to go with the existing organization. Or something like that.

Basically Austin ended up bypassing the normal expansion process and jumping to the head of the line, which I'm sure the other cities are happy about. But it's probably the only way it could get done.

I, for one, am really psyched. Now I have a local team to root for that isn't the Horns.

Austin is really more of a 'progressive' NIMBY city, to be blunt. Every item of 'update' that I have seen is the target of 'lets save the *landmark*' which typically is in reality some shithole diner or such. Not to mention the absolute lethal minefield relating to any pulling *any* sort of permit for even the simplest of home renovation, let alone if (heaven forbid) you rebuild *or* new build on a lot.

And, for the record, the Austin City Council is the most anti-commerce city government I have ever seen. That is even in comparison the Bay Area cities where I lived (I didnt live in SF, though). I mean, this is a city where it is against the law to consider someone's arrest record in deciding whether to extend an initial offer of employment..... Lol.

To hear your characterization of the Austin City Council as 'reactionary' really does highlight how amazingly different our worldviews are. Lol.

For the record, we do agree with the result. At least the city is not on the hook for building the damn thing like so many other cities go overboard with.

And, it will be the absolute *last* professional team that Austin ever gets. Talking with some cohorts, it is obvious the other pro sports monopoly that exists in this town will never allow another revenue pro team in to compete with them for the sports dollar here.

To be clear, I was calling the Austin Neighborhoods Council (ANC) reactionary. Precisely because of their kneejerk opposition to any change, as you note.

Same as I have donated for years, which my wife says is way too much. How about you?

I'm not wealthy enough to fund a softball stadium. Although, if I were, I'd likely choose another sport's facilities, admittedly.
