Do you work for the Athletic in sales?
Breaking News: Site that makes money off selling recruiting rankings says recruiting rankings matter.

Not saying they don't .. but I'm not gonna take 247s word for it.

Once again, behind The Athletic's paywall, but here's the story of a completely fabricated "3 star" recruit named Blake Carringer, who probably would have done well dating Lennay Kakua. And it fooled all of the supposedly expert recruiting sites.

So the next time somebody tells you how "these guys aren't frauds, they really know what they're doing," just remind them that they were all catfished. In 2019.

Recruiting websites are for profit websites that make their money based on subscriptions from thirsty fans who want to be sold a rosy future for the teams they root for. Once you realize that, it will make you (and your wallet) feel much better...

Lol

I saw another story about this catfish somewhere and meant to bring it up in this thread but just hadn't got around to it.

As I have said many times and simple math will show you it is impossible to rate accurately any player on a national scale. Hell look at the fights over metro teams which have been going on as long as big city high schools have been playing.

The return of championships and NFL players has to do with a self feeding loop built on the actual programs. I.e. Alabama gets the best: coaches, equipment, support. They get good players and advance them to the NFL by the attention they get from the beginning of the season hype about how good they are. Which gets them money and prestige, which attracts the best coaches, equipment, support, etc, and means they essentially get their pick of kids, who get the attention, who go to the NFL.

The fact that the NFL with all its money and effort is coin tossing picks after "over evaluating" the much smaller field of "elite college" juniors and seniors should tell you all you need to know about supposed experts watching a few elite camps and a sample size of 10-12 high school games mostly on video are going to do on ranking the exponential number of high school players.

The same can be said of basketball.

Hell baseball with its entire minor league system, metrics, scouts, the major college baseball system, and junior college, plus independent leagues still struggles with this and it's been at it for damn near a century with a ton of resources committed to it.

Never mind you're talking about high school kids who may not have finished growing and certainly will physically mature over the next 3-5 years since many are evaluated at 16-17 and males can continue to develop until 20-22. At least in women's sports 99% of them are done as 18-19 year olds. That doesn't even include physical development from strength and conditioning or coaching/skills development compared to what they had in high school.
Top schools recruit top players. I'm sure they all have the resources to make their own evaluations. Obviously their recruits will have high star ratings on average.

But over and over again we've seen the phoniness of the star system. Ratings go up or down depending on changing offer sheets and commitments. The catfishing story just drives the point home.
