The new football stadium, under construction on the campus at the University of South Alabama will be named Hancock Whitney Stadium.
For those of us who are unaware, what's the significance of the name?

Money. Lol. We entered into a financial partnership for them to have naming rights on the stadium for 10 years. They’ve not released the details of that partnership, however.

Right, but who is Hancock Whitney?

EDIT: Google tells me it's a bank.

It's a bank, for those not in the region.

Thanks. Good to know.

Congrats on having someone claim naming rights on the stadium so quick.
Good for South

The Hancock Bank started on the Mississippi gulf coast and Whitney Bank started in New Orleans, both in the 1800's. They merged in 2011 forming Hancock Whitney Bank.

Joey Jones Field ?
So in the ballpark of $10mil for selling the naming right to the stadium?

I think you’re in the ballpark, but no one knows the exact number.
We should sell the naming rights to our stadium, having it named after a coach with a losing record isn’t exactly a great look.
All the cool teams name their stadiums after banks.
Yeah we aren't cool...at.all.

Yea I'd say the name on your field is the opposite of cool.

Wasnt even talking field although why his name hasnt been removed is baffling. But the fact that they have not been able to get a buyer for naming rights considering where we play is amazing. Major AD fail.

I dont think it's a big fail as you describe it. Ben mentioned before that that companies have approached us before, but we didnt like the offers on the table and decided to wait. We sold the naming right to the field for $10mil, so we can guess that our AD is waiting for $30-$40mil type of money to sell away the naming right to our stadium. Patience could be the right move here.

I'm guessing South Al was able to get a naming deal done quickly because they asked for a modest sum of money, which is totally fine because they were pretty frugal in their overall budget to construct their stadium.
Umm hmm...sure..

...why should our AD be in a hurry to sell away the stadium's naming right during our football program's low point?
