South Alabama has nine players in the transfer portal. What about your team?

Haven't heard anything yet, but I'm sure there will be some.

Is it a purge of players who did not buy into the culture or is the culture not worth buying into?

Branner already transferred to ACU as a graduate transfer. Graduated in December and enrolled already at ACU.

South Alabama fans will be on the hard sell, but from the outside looking in, the team was emphatically worse than it was under Joey Jones. Defense is non-existent under Campbell, something you absolutely could not say when Joey Jones was the head coach. The jags lead the nation in penalties and were in the bottom quarter in turnovers. Scoring margin dropped 8 full points. That's unheard of when you're replacing a head coach that wasn't very good.

I imagine the culture isn't that good, based on the penalties and defensive performance alone.

From the article, it looks like several of them either already have/are about to graduate and keeping options open. At first I thought it was some sort of mass exodus because of the new coach (or is it?).

We've lost a WR and a DB that I'm aware of. Both went to JUCO so it may have been grades related (purely speculation on my part).
Our coaches went to the portal.

The good news for Troy, is that from the looks of Twitter and what media has been reporting, the players really like Chip Lindsey and what he's going to bring. Not to mention Lindsey is retaining as much of Neal Brown's staff as possible. And the best recruits from this year's signing class are already on campus and enrolled.

I don't forsee very many players opting to transfer from Troy.

I was not a big fan of the hire he did have some FBS wins on his resume but only 2 years of FBS exp for a 52-year-old coach is not a recipe for success in the belt. South Al was thinking they could pull a lot of kids from the Mississippi JUCO ranks but once again you don't build a foundation with JUCO's.

Napier will take some lumps along the way but he is sticking to recruiting majority high school players that is how you build a good foundation.

Campbell has had success at every level he has ever played or coached. There is nothing to say he is guaranteed to succeed at FBS, but 1 season with a bunch of players who didn’t buy in to his system (note the 9 transfers all at the same time, right after the first team meetings of the season), should not be used to say he will not succeed here.

Only time will tell. I’m still optimistic that the changes he is making will be for the best, homerish or not.

We'll see what we'll see. The native are restless here in JagLand. If there isn't marked improvement in 2019 (6-6) , then coach should go. Not interested in what his track record is elsewhere. He's 3-9 at South with the same assistants as 2018.

I haven't looked at those stats , but being the most penalized team in FBS is no surprise after suffering through the last two or 3 years. Unsportsmanlike and just plain boneheaded penalties have made a lot of games a pain to watch. We might have averaged as many penalties as first downs. That's got to stop. I didn't see much of an improvement in ANYTHING in year one, but hopefully the transfers are a sign of Campbell laying down some rules. We've got a long way to go, and if running some people off is what it takes then adios. If things aren't markedly improved next year in at least that area then I'll start second guessing the hire.

I'm not sure of what I think about Coach Campbell yet-concerned the moment I learned he'd be bringing mostly FCS level assistants along with him when he could have probably accepted the job and recruited FBS-experienced assistants to South. This I know though...he's got a VERY short window of time to turn things around. Having a losing season at the brand-new Hancock-Whitney Stadium should and probably WOULD be the end of his tenure in 2020.
The portal may lead to the Transfer U Red Wolves with Head Coach-in-waiting Jason Brown being brought in to solidify the ...uh culture.
