This is a really good mid-major conference this year. I do think ULM may be the best team this year on a neutral court, which is what matters in getting to tourney. Definitely 3 tiers where all teams in each tier are almost interchangeable. ULM got robbed at GSU on the road and went cold in a second half at GS, but hats off to them coming back and winning on a great shot and play at the end. I expect us to beat both at home, where we are undefeated. I started to rank them, but realized mine was the same as bokobobcat. So I concur.
I'm not going to say ULM is top of the list yet. This road trip to Georgia is probably the toughest on their schedule...or for anyone who does it...and they did very well despite going 0-2. But there's a lot of season left to play and the better regular season team has yet to get established.
I agree SOT. The top is interchangeable, but I’m a homer, so ULM’s argument is as good as anybody’s.
When does football season start back?
Well, the Jim Fox era has to end at the end of the season. App went from winning divisions every few years to barely winning 10 games a year.
Just not enough of a sample to rank them right now. I would put Ga St ar #1 then quite a cluster of teams including everyone except App so

#1 Ga St
#2-#11 almost everyone else
#12 App
Oooh! Basketball power rankings!!!

1. Georgia State - Unbeaten so far
2. Texas State - Only 3-1 team in the league with close loss to GSU
3. Georgia Southern - Best of the 2-2 teams I think and will be tough at full strength
4. Louisiana - Would have had them out of the top 4 if we did this a couple days ago, but solid win over GS yesterday
5. ULM - Very dangerous with the emergence of D Smith. Definite contender.
6. Troy - Not sure Cunningham is a good enough coach to challenge this year
7. Little Rock - Been a surprise to me so far. I thought they'd suck this year. This Tucker kid must be the real deal.
8. Coastal - Cutherbertson a good player. Keep losing close games.
9. UTA - Just got what was a surprising road sweep to me. May be better than I thought.
10. South Alabama - Started 2-0 but not sold on them. Sikes and Ajayi are good players.
11. Arkansas State - Cockfield a player. May be all they have though.
12. App State - I think they're better than last place, but hard to put them anywhere else at 0-4
Right now I think the contenders are the top 5 in my rankings. GSU, TXST, GS, UL, and ULM. I think there's a pretty sizable gap between 5 and 6.

Won't happen. DG shouldn't have given him that 2 year extension.

He earned that two year extension. But having a coaching change at the end of the year is what's right for the school.
1-5 are interchangeable for sure. Nice to have so many good teams. Even the mid to bottom isn’t bad.

Lol
If anyone makes the trip to Georgia and wins both, they'll get the top spot in my rankings.

GSU, ULM, GS, and TXST look like top 4.

ULL would be up there if they didn't have so many injuries.

USA and Troy have some guys but don't look particularly well coached.

LR, App, and UTA can play with anyone and will beat some people.

Coastal is preseason ranked in every baseball publication.

Lol

well I dont know about that. the ncaa has our best team at 103, behind powerhouse programs such as hofstra and wofford and etsu and liberty. just sayin..I would like a few of our teams to be ranked in the 50's and 60's. our not so good teams like uta and app. are way down the list.
Sun Belt is ranked 17th as a conference, which is "meh."

Here are my thoughts about the teams so far. Not ranking them. Just my observations on each.

A-STATE: Cockfield is the real deal. They have a consistent second scorer in Eaton. Boudie is one of the more improved players in the league and gives them (finally) an inside presence along with Walley off the bench. Better defensively than they've been. I think if they finish .500 in the league it's a good step forward.

APP: EVERYONE thought they'd be better than they are. Shabazz and Forrest give them a good backcourt and Johnson is a very good rebounder. But the newcomers haven't been as advertised for the most part. So far, the most disappointing team in the league.

CCU: Last year I thought it was Cuthbertson and not much else. This year I think the same. They'll beat a few teams because there will be nights they'll shoot it really well (right, Troy?). But this is a second division team.

GA SO:--They miss Ike Smith. You think of GS as a good perimeter shooting team. They aren't. Their inside presence is better than its been the last couple of years. But as long as Tookie is upright, they have a chance.

GA ST--These guys are scary shooting the basketball. Benlevi, Jeff Thomas and Devin Mitchell can all fill it. Personally, I think Simonds needs to shoot it less, especially from the perimeter. Still can't rebound the ball. They're the best in the league til someone else proves otherwise.

LR: If you haven't seen Tucker play, you're missing a treat. They're getting better every week. Lottie missed the Louisiana swing because of a broken finger but he's back now. Knowell is your leading candidate for Freshman of the Year. Their downside is they aren't good defensively and they turn it over WAY too much.

LOUISIANA: Losing Marquetti was a huge blow. They've got precious little depth. But Gant is playing like the POY and Stroman is the best distributor in the league. No one has stepped up to replace Marquetti as a scorer and that's an issue.

ULM: I said before the season to watch out for this team. Daishon Smith is lethal and paired with Munnings and Ertel, ULM can really score the basketball. JD Williams gives them an inside presence they haven't had. They don't turn it over much. I think they're as good as anyone in this league. Fant-Ewing might be the place opponents go to die this year.

SOUTH: I'm still scratching my head over the Richie Riley hire. He went for the quick fix at Nicholls and left them in an APR mess. Looks like he's doing the same in Mobile, stockpiling transfers for next year. Sikes and Ajayi are very good players, but this team is not a contender.

TROY: Another head scratcher. This team won at WKU, something Wisconsin couldn't do. The one game suspension of Varnado tells me there might be a chemistry issue. They have the players to contend and it's a surprise they aren't more consistent.

UTA: Better not go to sleep on these guys. Ogden's team, like Little Rock, just keeps getting better. I don't think they are a contender, but they could very well be a spoiler.

TEXAS STATE: Is this the year the Bobcats finally get a return on the Danny Kaspar investment? They finally have multiple shooters and Danny's teams always defend. Nottingham joins Boudie as one of the guys on my most improved list. They've made a living of losing close games in the past. This year, they are winning most of them.

Apologies. Usually basketball talk is confined to one thread. So I posted it in the general thread and then saw there was a power rankings thread as well. Would have just posted it here if I saw it first.
