Just trying to gauge what people's opinions are of this since UTA is apparently thinking hard about adding football...

Yes. As long as it means eventually picking up another east school or central school, i just like symmetry so we would need 12 then 03-wink

I really like having 10 teams currently because of the payout our schools get from the CFP. It's a huge boost to our football programs when we are making more than CUSA, MAC, and possibly MWC.

At the same time, I'd like for Texas State to have an in-state rival. In that scenario, I'd have to think the Sun Belt would want to expand to 12 to even things out... I would only be okay with that if we added a current, quality FBS program... no more adding FCS teams.

It should be a western school so that USA can go to the East

Fair point, lets add nmsu back in and call it a decade.

UTA adds football

Boot UALR

Add either NMSU back or MOSU
Split media and playoff money even more....yes sounds like a great idea.
Can't wait until December of 2019. . . .

. . . .. you know . . . . when we're having this conversation again

Don’t UTA and UALR already get a share of the football money since they’re full members? I think I remember reading that on here once.

I agree 100% on that. Get the Aggies full sports and we're set.

No, I am pretty sure they do not. I do think they are guaranteed a spot in the football part of the conference if they add football though.

I was also under the impression that UTA and UALR had a standing invite to the football side of the conference if they added football.

Yes, full conference members are automatically included in any conference-sponsored sport if they add it. That rule was a significant piece of how USA was able to start it's football program.
I'd like to see UTA have football. Their fans deserve it. Of course if they add football I think the conference would have three real options.

1. UTA adds football and we play with unbalanced divisions in Football. Nothing else changes.

2. UTA adds football and we add another team to balance the league kicking UALR to the curb or possibly a football only member keeping UALR. Best options IMHO are Liberty (probably not for many reasons), NMSU (I'd be fine wtih this one), Missouri St. (maybe the most potential of any FCS move up) or Eastern Kentucky. - All of these assumes we can't poach a team from CUSA.

3. UTA adds football keeping UALR and we add another two teams. One for football maybe from the list above and one for basketball and the other sports to balance the non-football schools at 14.

That is what I am saying, that they have a grandfather clause that is an automatic invite if they add football.
Yes because then we might finally have a rival in this conference.

No because then we have to share recruits, money, and add another conference member.

UTA will be a great addition especially for TX State and Ark State.

They should be able to schedule OOC games with home and games against:

UNT
UTSA
UTEP
Houston

Plus games single away games with

Kansas State
Kansas

I don't rule out TCU, SMU and Baylor.

This will help UTA transition faster.
1. If UTA adds football, we are looking at another startup program that might take a decade to be really competitive. The league is getting stronger. UTA makes it weaker.

2. Then we would need to add another western team in order for USA to move East where they belong. Missouri State has made no statement they are interested in moving up. New Mexico State is just two damn far away There are no other real possibilities.

3. Little Rock isn't going anywhere. They've been a member here longer than anyone not named South Alabama, Louisiana or Arkansas State.

I don't know why we have expansion threads. It is just because it's fun for everyone to come up with their dream conference? Because there is really no logical reason to have a discussion on expansion. Of course, if UTA adds football we may not have a choice.
Ultimately it comes down to “If UTA announced today that football was coming back, it’d be 5 years before they were full FBS”

In 5 years, who knows what will be going on in FBS.
