Sounds like Delany is happy with Maryland as part of the B1G but not so much with Rutgers.

It's going to take some time to get everything straightened out and become competitive again. With all the athletes in the NY/NJ area, it's hard to imagine not doing it IF they get the right people in the right positions.
It should have been obvious to everyone, at the time Maryland and Rutgers were invited, that Maryland's athletic department was in far better shape than Rutgers'.

Maybe Delany is trying to send the message that Rutgers has had long enough to get up to speed, and should have already ramped up to the point where they would be reasonably competitive across the board.
Rutgers is a long-term project. That said, I'm surprised the wheels of the football program fell off after Schiano left. I thought he left the program in a good, stable condition. But I like the long-term prospects of the school.
Long-term, it will be incredibly difficult for Rutgers to compete in the East alongside Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State. Maryland and Indiana should be competitive games each year, but unless one of those four top programs is in a rebuilding year (or scandal), it is likely Rutgers always has at least four conference losses right off the bat. This year, both Kansas and Buffalo were scheduled as potential wins, along with Texas State. Had they won just three conference games, they could have been bowling.

Next year, they have BC, Liberty and UMass on the schedule. They have additional upcoming games down the road against Syracuse and Temple. They will need to get creative and flexible on their non-conference scheduling in order to have a legitimate shot at reaching a bowl game.
The spineless wonder we have for President only cares about one thing -- eliminating the student subsidy.

So what do you suggest a president should do with a local media that somehow hates the idea of big time college sports in the area and factions within the institution that can't see the forest for the trees? By the way, a college president should be judged by the performance of the institution as a whole. Sports are a front porch but, ultimately, used to promote the college itself.

We'll never be LSU or USC. We don't have a population that would forgive a lot of egregious things that go on elsewhere.

At this point I don't really blame Delany for saying what he said. He simply got tired of the questions from the haters in the local yokel and mediocre college sports media and had to say something. The scummy chum like the Fordes, the Ourands, the Syracuse alums at E-Spin, Connecticut media, etc.,are a sight to behold. With all of that against him you can only cover for so long. The near-perfect storm of negativity surrounding the RU program was not what he hoped for.
Merge in the medical school and retire.
As long as Rutgers remains in NJ they satisfy the criteria the Big Ten used to add them. Rutgers is there to add NJ to the BTN and add P5 wins for Ohio State, Michigan, et. al.
I thought you should hear it straight from the horse's mouth, instead of through second-hand sources:

The only concern I ever heard regarding Maryland was over their debt load and their capacity to serve the debt.

That's an administrative issue. Otherwise Maryland has been sound.
Well we are competitive in wrestling, lacrosse, women's soccer and recently field hockey, and have had some success in track and field.

Football is atrocious but the hole that Flood left behind was pretty deep, and Ash may or may not be the person to dig out of the hole.

Basketball is in for some good times ahead. Again, Rice left us in a bad state and Jordan came in with a can of gas to put out the fire. Jordan was the only fireman on duty that night too.
I consider all 3 21st century Big Ten added to be failures.
I don't think they regret Rutgers at all. They just wish they would be more competitive instead of just a stepping stone to NY area alumni.
If they wanted a successful program, they could have gone after non-AAU (but still solid academically) UConn. For that matter, they could have gone after Pitt, Syracuse or Boston College. The ACC GOR was not signed yet.

What Delaney said didn't actually sound like regret. The people who were and still are against the decision will hear it that way, But he said basically said he's pleased with how Maryland is coming along and their tag-along was always understood to be a longer term project with good academics in a good media market and the only readily available add in good FB recruiting grounds.

Well, he doesn't mention the last, but that plus the extra W is what the rest of the Big Ten East will value in the add.
