This should end all silly assertions henceforth until the end of time that "Georgia State should have stayed at FCS for at least a decade to win some easy games and attract a large fanbase." Well, here is the perfect example to show that FCS wins don't matter and most college students/fans don't care about FCS successes (especially at places like Atlanta in modern times.)

Kennesaw coach's presser after beating Wofford in the 2nd round of FCS playoff at home. After the 23-3 record and big playoff runs during last 2 years, you'd think Kennesaw's students and casual fans would be excited. Nope.

Kennesaw is 11-1, ranked #2 in the FCS, and enjoying home-field advantage throughout the playoff.
Kennesaw's announced home attendance against Wofford in the 2nd round of the playoff was 3500.
Less than 2000 people showed up. a playoff game. at home.

Georgia State's jumpstart to the FBS was the right move. Our attendance would be even worse against some unknown FCS schools.

El Fin.
Jsu averages around 18,000 a game in a county of about 114,000

Cobb county has about 900,000

What’s the issue?
To be fair, we always had piss poor attendance during those early round games too.

It doesn’t help that the FCS that our starry-eyed older fans are nostalgic for doesn’t exist anymore. Most of the teams that we have fond memories of beating are G5 programs now. I’m sure App, Troy, and Arkansas State fans would agree that winning in the FCS nowadays doesn’t mean the same thing it meant back in the 80’s and 90’s.

That’s also why it wouldn’t have been smart for Georgia State to stay FCS and try to raise a fan base. There’s just not an opportunity to do that anymore. The FCS and football as a whole are completely different animals. D1-AA used to get way more coverage and respect than it does now.

KSU is following the Georgia Southern model of using the triple option to have early success and make a name for yourself and build from the ground up. The sad truth is you just can’t do that anymore.
I remember the first time we played y’all in the dome and there were like 700 people there. Those were the days.

As the older I get I am beginning to realize that most people could care less about CFB. This whole college football fan thing is essentially being part of a minority. Most schools are lucky they have a bandwagon following, where it is cool to say, "I am a dawg!" without knowing where the library is on campus.

The current trajectory of CFB is not stable. This first big hit I see happening in the next decade is ESPN going under. If they think they can survive with the trash of ESPN+ and ESPN3 they are wrong. They will continue to loss revenue and eventually whoever owns them will move to something new.

With that said I think the only way for our kind of schools to move forward is by winning. That or by hiring an amazing University President and AD that makes huge moves to increase the image of the university. But WINNING is the easiest way. KSU is young but if they win a Natty and continue to win they will have more people in the stands than a FBS GSU.
It's atlanta...none of you draw worth a damn other than the united.
KSU has the same dilemma as GaSt. If GaSt can’t get attention, KSU is going to get a fraction of what GaSt gets. It’s just how it is in a city like that, bigger things going on.
Maybe starting a football team in the middle of a huge metropolis wasn't the can't-miss scenario we all heard it was.
Maybe they should just report that 16,390 people showed up and that their conference is holding them back.

KSU's success is falling right in line with UGA's success with Kirby and KSU is getting swallowed up by it.

KSU might be a bad example because they just don't have enough history to even compete against a game like UGA/Alabama SEC title game.

Hell, when we hosted a playoff game during the 2012 UGA/Alabama SEC title game, our attendance was around 10k.

Jacksonville is probably an ideal market for a successful FCS team.

Not for minor league ball....
I think we all know this already. That's why we moved to FBS. I mean all the fcs championships some of yall have are awesome and I'm sure you cherish them but before we joined the Sun Belt and I joined this board I had never even heard of Georgia Southern even with all of your nattys and the only reason I had heard of App was because of Michigan. I'm sure the same goes for yall regarding TXST as well. FCS is out of sight out of mind for 99.9% of people.
Hey look an FCS team draws about like we do! Thread inbound!

Their revenue is stable. The issue is their cost management is out of control.

App played Texas State in football in FCS.
Southern played Texas State in FCS as well.

I don't think this is a FCS issue, but a program/AD issue. There are plenty of FCS teams that draw well.

Pretty much every Georgia Southern fan remembers that November night in 2005.
