Get set, go. It’s bowl time. In a less politically correct time, a more humorous time — just the names of some of these bowls would have brought all sorts of jokes and ridicule —- take the Cheez-It Bowl for starters. If attendance at some of these FBS conference championships is any indication, a number of these bowls will set records for empty stadiums this time around. Could it be that this market is saturated and full of pretenders?

The FBS needs to get playoff like FCS. The cronyism of the Bowl system will never allow that to happen.

The group of five conferences need to do something. They are totally excluded from the national championship no matter what. I am guessing that they are happy as long as they get bowl games.
I'm an old man. When I was young, I looked forward to Bowl Games. Now there are so many that even the "good" bowls have lost their significance.

Yes I rem when New Years Day was for watching Bowl games. Now it’s as if there’s as many Bowl games as Baskin Robbins flavors.
Appalachian State gave up an existence of playing in a real playoff system just so that they could play a meaningless bowl game against Middle Tennessee State.

Well done, guys.

My guess, North Dakota State is exactly where they want to stay. As for App State, a bunch of money just to play another regional school (did anyone notice the empty MTSU stadium in the C-USA title game?) in a bowl submerged in an overflowing bowl tank. They probably envisioned playing at least a lesser Power Five opponent in a bowl by now. And, if I’m correct, their attendance is not even what it was in their heyday SoCon days, same with Ga Southern.
Yea, gave up FCS no momey playoff games to play in three straight money paying Bowl games, playing million dollar payday FBS games, got The Miami Hurricanes to Boone and is reported to have an agreement to play North Carolina in Boone. Yea gave up a lot.

Well I guess they win the money war. Myself, I'd rather play in meaningful postseason games.

The place was beyond packed for the conference title game in Boone against Troy St. And enthusiasm to match. Huge crowd rushed the field afterwards. Serious big-time atmosphere (as much as possible in Boone).

As a minor tangent, our former ASun conference mate, UCF, played a HUGE game with a HUGE, raucous crowd Saturday in their come-from-behind win over Memphis. We were likely never gonna be on the same track as UCF (who could conceivably in the future be playing for the national title), but the comparison to Appy still stings, and will long into the future. Thanks again, paulie and dave.

Actually they were playing Louisiana and it was far from packed. Attendance was less than 15k with lots and lots of empty seats. To be fair the weather was awful. Clearly App thinks FBS works for them. I think the ceiling is so low in FBS for non power 5 teams and App has pretty much topped out. Where do they go from here? The natural progression is to CUSA which gets you the same ceiling. The deck is stacked so much in favor of the power 5 that nobody outside of those conferences has a chance to play on the big stage. We seem to debate this topic every year but nothing changes. The situation UCF faces is a total sham but it's as good as it will get. When they finally expand the playoffs it will be to accommodate Ohio State and as many SEC schools as they can fit, not App or UCF.

And doubled their budget (an $18 million per year increase) to get that paltry $900K split between both schools-low bowl payout. That's $54 million in 3 years to get to the Nobody Cares bowl. 05-stirthepot

FBS definitely raises exposure but as you show it raises expenses more. To me it just publicly declares that quality isn't important and it's all about the $. It was sad to see Marshall prostitute themselves last weekend to allow VT to keep their bowl streak going. That's basically the roll that Cusa, Sunbelt, etc. fill these days.

14,963 listed as the attendance for this Sun Belt Championship game. Lots of empty seats for an FBS conference championship game, especially on the home field of a team with historic success since moving up. They used to more than double that attendance on a regular basis for regular SoCon games. The ETSU game drew more than that back in the day. If money is the driving force, then how much is the payout for the New Orleans Bowl where they play the runner-up from C-USA?

All points absolutely true. The FCS may not make any money but the expense is a lot less and they actually have a chance to compete for a national championship.

Division I basketball is still in place, including, of course, these FCS schools. As this basketball field keeps expanding, doesn’t look like a real danger at present of that being broken up into subdivisions. Is it more prestigious to go to the big dance in March or play in one of these obscure FBS bowl games for schools operating under budget restraints?

No, they played Troy St., in Boone. What may have confused you is that I called it the title game. It was the game that gave Appy the East Division title - and it was a great, lively crowd in drizzly weather.
And yes, *the* title game was against Southwestern La. and had less turnout - in worse weather.

Oh, and BTW...……………….Satterfield is moving on, to coach Louisville.

I say it’s better to go to the dance. You have a much larger audience watching and if can win a game the exposure is priceless. Playing in a Toilet Bowl football game in front of ton of empty seats and zero national audience is lame.

If you had watched it, you'd know what I mean. There were obviously empty seats up high, but all around the field, it was packed and the fans were going crazy. I admit, I don't understand it, either, but it was what it was. And yes, many thousands rushed the field after it was over. Must be something in the water over there.
