Might have missed it, but the 2019 Lacrosse schedule is up... https://jmusports.com/schedule.aspx?path=wlax

Dukes open at UNCheat.
How much did we lose last year? Are we talented enough to repeat?

I remember our goalie being a pretty young player and she was playing great. I hope there are enough pieces from last year to compete for the title again.
Maryland coming to Hburg is going to be a HUGE game. Make plans to be in town that weekend!

Tl;dr - We are coached well enough and talented enough to be dangerous. Will we repeat? Not sure, because we lose a lot of scoring. Obviously, I believe we will 03-wink

Yes, our goalie, Molly Dougherty, is a R-So. this year, which means she was beast mode last year as a Frosh. We graduated our top two goal scorers (Kristen Gaudian and Elena Romesburg) and four of our top five (Haley Warden and Morgan Hardt). Defensively, we graduated Rebecca Tooker and Corinne Schmidt, but return three highly experienced defenders who started every game last year, including two rising seniors in Caroline Sdanowich and Lauren Duvall (Emma Johnson will be a junior this year).

Hanna Haven is our top attacking player returning, and I expect Maddie McDaniel and Halle Duenkel to help pick up some slack on offense. I would also keep an eye on Charlotte Haggerty who had 12 goals last year as a freshman. Not sure what will happen on defense as we have a few rising Sophomores that could get starting jobs. And that is saying nothing regarding our incoming freshmen.

Good stuff as always from Assyrian. Sdanowich is dope and gonna be a rock in the back. Haggerty and Dougherty got to go to USA Nat'l Team camp this summer so their confidence and play should skyrocket. Last year Shelley was really excited about another freshman that we didn't see as much, Katie Checkoskey (sp?) and I'm guessing she'll be important too. This young group hung right with the USWNT this summer so my hopes are higher than I thought they would be after losing Romesburg, Warden, Gaudian.

Thanks for the kind words, PS 04-cheers

Katie Checkosky played in every game last year as a true freshman and started 4 of them. I would be disappointed if this team was not hosting a couple games come this postseason.
Sorry to interrupt football coach speculation, but big (and GREAT!) Lax news. Our goalie, Molly Dougherty, was selected to Team USA's roster for the Spring Premiere in Stanford, CA. Not sure if she will be on the senior or U-19 team (my guess is senior), but what a great honor. She is one of 8 college players on the USA roster.

It'll be interesting to see the effect on recruiting that our NC will have for next year & the following. Would like to think it'll get a boost, but you never know how much built in P5 bias there is in prospective student athletes. I'm assuming that most/all of this years freshman were inked before we won the Natty.
Spoke to coach Klaes-Bawcombe last night at the Unleashed function in Richmond, she said they have looked VERY strong this fall and while that doesn't count she had expected a rebuilding year to at least take the fall for the players to come together. They seem ahead of the curve. She was also very excited about recruiting, apparently getting a set of twins that were going to Hopkins originally. In state UVA is still the recruiting competition, but now she is competing even more favorably with the traditional ACC powers and the Ivy League.

She was Coach Houston before there was a coach Houston in Harrisonburg, her pregame speeches are right up there with his. Love the fact that she's an alum too, wish there was a football coach out there that could check the boxes she can check.

problem is like App State found out....even an alum isn't going to be enough to keep the p5/big money players away in football.

in lacrosse, she can do everything at JMU that she can do anywhere else. That was proven last year.

Oh I agree with you, though she could actually double her salary by going elsewhere she stays because she's an alum. She was in a negotiation year last year before the NC, let's see how we treat her during the next contract negotiation.

If we get a serious coach who happens to be an alum and they succeed they'll be gone in 3 years. If we hire someone just because they are an alum, we'll have to fire them when they don't succeed.

Had a great time talking to her last night as well. She also seemed pretty excited about the growing awareness of the sport at JMU and with Alumni due to the National Championship. I, for one, will be paying closer attention this year!
Harder to find WLAX coaching salaries as opposed to FB, but UVA pays Julie Myers $136,700, while JMU pays Klaes-Bawcombe (as best I could find), $91,755. Not sure if her last extension got her a pay bump also...none of the articles I found referenced one...but at the same time I'd be surprised if a NC didn't get her a permanent bump to go along with the bonus. That $40k difference I don't think is enough to draw her over to UVA. The COL increase from Harrisonburg to Charlottesville is probably more than that. Add in that she's a Duke and I would be surprised if she moved on.

Back to the original topic...I think Dougherty's experience with Team USA is going to be awesome. Not only does she get some coaching by some of the top coaches in the country (other than SKB), but she'll get to practice and play against some of the top players in the country. That experience should be invaluable. Great to hear that SKB says the team isn't experiencing the expected dropoff. Hopefully we can make another decent run this year. Playing consistently at that high of a level will help recruiting even more.

EDIT: Last year, UNC's coach was up to $150k, but that's after an increase of $30k over the last 3 years, being there 24 years, winning two NC's, winning two national COY, and being 3rd in career wins. SKB could certainly find an increase going to the ACC, but not anywhere close to doubling her salary.

i don't know enough about lacrosse, but i suspect lacrosse goalies are like soccer goalies. only as good as the defense in front of them. it's pretty hard to stop that lacrosse ball when its being whipped in there from close.

the best shot stoppers in soccer can look bad if the four defender in front of them are not very good. we played very good team defense. that was a big part of the team's overall success.

You're looking in the wrong direction, look north. Cathy Reese at Maryland took home $265,000 the year she won the championship. Ohio State's Alexis Venechanos was paid $258,000 in the 2016-2017 season. Some of that is bonus money, but she made that without winning much of anything. So yes, she could move to a P5 team and more than double what's she making if she wins there like she's won here.

Wow. One of eight, that's amazing, thanks for posting this. Congrats to the young lady.

Wish my daughter had stuck with the Lax, she was pretty good, but too much of a bookworm in HS to really spend the time.

Ah well.

Actually in soccer usually the reverse is true. A great goalie can make a crap defense look better. A great defense can help a goalie look better, but a bad defense usually will show you who is a great goalie vs. just a competent one.
Dukes ranked #4 in the nation to start the season in one poll... https://jmusports.com/news/2018/12/13/la...-poll.aspx
Also, don't know if people are aware of the LAX network which hosts a fair number of JMU regular season and playoff games (comes in handy for away games). It used to be the games were stuck behind a paywall, but they should have more free options this year. I know the CAA does a lot with them on both the men's and women's side, and the CAA site still says $7.99 a month, so I'm not sure exactly how that would work.

In addition they have some highlight videos, in case you wanted to watch some JMU highlights during the exam week sports lull. https://www.laxsportsnetwork.com/ncaa-women
Bump.

LAX Sports Network will release their CAA Broadcast schedule today at 3pm. Hope to see a large number of the WLAX games broadcast include the Good Gals.
