What's the difference between shots versus shots on goal?

If this is similar to hockey, a shot is in the general direction of the goal/net but a shot on goal must either hit the post, hit the goalie or their stick and/or score a goal. Maybe it’s even a shot that is within the goal circle.

Minor nit, but in ice hockey shot attempts that hit the post/crossbar aren't counted as shots. The goalie has to make a save on a shot attempt that is determined to have otherwise scored for it to be counted as a shot. Not sure if that's the same as Lacrosse.

Soccer rule is the same. It's a shot on goal if it's a ball that would have scored without a defender stopping it.

Thanks for clarifying. I always assumed a shot on goal... involves hitting said goal. Is a score keeper just making judgement calls on if it counts?

If you are talking about judgment calls on SOG, then no. The number of shots on goal should equal opposing goals scored plus saves (at least that is the case in soccer and hockey. I believe it is the same in LAX as well). The Shots category is a bit more of a judgment in soccer, but basically if it looks like the guy/gal was trying to make the keeper work (even if it goes over/wide by 5 yards), they call it a shot.

Note: In soccer, a shot that is "saved" by the bar counts only as a shot, not a shot on goal. Looks like that is consistent with hockey and lacrosse. Shots off the post don't count as saves, so DooX is right; a shot on goal requires hitting said goal, and a save means someone got in the way of said shot.
So a shot can be left up to the score keeper’s judgment but shots on goal must have been saved by a defender when it’s trajectory would’ve otherwise put it in the goal?

Yes. It is a little easier to tell in Lacrosse as well, since after a wide shot, the referee will award possession to whichever team has the closest player to the ball at the time it goes out of bounds. If it were not considered a shot, it would be a normal change of possession.
There is some subjectivity in terms of whether the puck would have been on net had the goalie not intervened. If the puck is clearly going wide on a shot attempt but the goalie still deflects it, it won't get counted as a shot/save. But as shot attempts gets closer to the net it can get hard to tell. I have seen shot counts get adjusted after a break in the action once the record keeper has had a chance to review different angles of the attempt. It seems like a little thing but it's something they want to try and get right because it impacts a goalie's save percentage as well as shot count / shooting percentage for the offensive player. Those are all factors in showing how productive the player is, which ultimately could affect contracts and end of year awards.

I actually was calculating the drive but Friday afternoon traffic on the Beltway made it appear impossible to get there on time. Although I guess I could have left after the first inning.
Lightning delay in College Park. Opening game start time against Stony Brook has been moved back to a little after 5pm per JMU LAX twitter.

I was thinking it was in the ‘Burg.
Good Gals score a couple late in the 1st half to take a 5-3 lead into the half. Hopefully they can keep it up in the 2nd.
5-3 JMU lead at the half. Very sloppy first half. We’re fortunate to be leading.
Up 6-3. Should be 7-3, but had a goal denied I guess because she shot the ball with the stick coming down...how else do you shoot?? Some of the rules are ridiculous. This right after she was body checked... And then a few possessions later as one of our players shot she got checked and fell over, no call. Very next possession on the other end they got a free position shot for the same thing. Also, I love that if they just run in the path of our shooter we get a foul and they get the ball. I know they're working on making these rules better, but they still have some changes to make...

Goal by SB, JMU up 6-4 now with 23 minutes left.
And again...their player with the ball runs into one of our players and they get a free position shot which leads to a goal. Missing how these plays are any different, yet are called the opposite direction.

JMU now up only 6-5 with 17:59 left.
Some shoddy officiating in this one. That no goal was BS.
SB is the more aggressive team and that’s why they’re winning. No one is crashing the net on offense. Too much passing.
