After storms canceled games in September, Iowa State picked up Incarnate Word as an opponent for December 1, provided that there were no conflicts with the Big 12 championship game and the FCS playoffs.

Fast forward to November. Incarnate Word made the FCS playoffs, and plays November 24 at Montana State. This opens up a scenario:

* If Incarnate Word wins, they play December 1 in the next round of the FCS playoffs at North Dakota State.
* If Incarnate Word loses, they play December 1 in a regular season game at Iowa State.

Implications:
* A win would result in advancement in the playoffs, but a loss of a game check for the athletic department from Iowa State.
* A loss would cause them to play a regular season game....after a post-season game.

Nuts.
Unless UIW thinks they can make a Cinderella run in the FCS playoff I think they'd be better off losing and collecting the paycheck.
Game was automatically cancelled when UIW made the playoffs.

Per the press release from the UIW athletic department, the December 1 Iowa State game is still TBD. If they lose to Montana State, I would expect them to play the game.

So if they beat Montana State, they would lose a check from Iowa State, and at the same time set themselves up to get pounded by the Bison.

Thanks, didn't see that. All the releases written at the time of the contract said the game would be cancelled if Iowa State reached the Big XII championship game or if UIW made the FCS playoffs. I bet Iowa State is being asked if they want to go forward with it considering the uncertainty of not knowing whether you'll be having and hosting the game until just 7 days before. That's asking a lot of the ISU coaches, players, staff and fans.
If UIW wins, there 100% will be Cyclone fans somewhere showing up to the game.
Iowa State will play Drake, not Incarnate Word, on December 1st.

Quote:The Iowa State Cyclones have made another change to their 2018 football schedule, this time by adding a game against the Drake Bulldogs.

Iowa State will host Drake at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018. The game will kick off at Noon ET/11:00am CT and it will be streamed live via Cyclones.TV.

“We’re most grateful to Drake Athletics Director Brian Hardin, Coach Rick Fox and the Bulldog leadership team for working with us through a very fluid situation,” ISU Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. “Coach (Matt) Campbell wants to play a 12th game and I believe our fans would welcome another chance to see this bowl-bound team play. I know the Bulldogs will enjoy the chance to play at Jack Trice Stadium and compete against a Power 5 opponent.”

Iowa State previously announced that they would host the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday, Dec. 1. However, Incarnate Word was selected to the FCS Playoffs as an at-large team and opted not to play Iowa State if they lose their First-Round matchup this weekend.
Since Iowa State doesn't need the FCS win to qualify for a bowl, a local game against a non-counter is just fine. Drake had a game cancelled as well.
Whoa!

So reading between the lines in this article, it looks like ISU wanted to play Drake all along, but couldn't get it to count for bowl eligibility. Once ISU got six wins, and UIW made the FCS playoffs, they were free to play a 12th game against Drake.

Drake is 7-3, 6-2 in the non-scholarship Pioneer League.

I haven't seen anything about the payout, but it can't be much. Drake can bus to Ames the morning of the game and be home for dinner.

Sure, it's a glorified scrimmage, but the money stays in state, and ISU gets a win.

FWIW, Incarnate Word bailed out of their game with ISU, regardless of Saturday's result:

I think Incarnate Word bailing out of their game with ISU even if they lost shows that teams have no interest in playing a game after playoffs are completed. For those who insist that 1st round losers of playoffs would still want to go bowling......
Iowa State meets Drake for first time since 1985 when Drake won (what!!!). Cyclones beat #7 Okie St, KU, KSU, USU, and Vanderbilt that year.
Drake to FBS!!! I hear the WAC is coming back.....

Gotta wait for UTRGV to finish their feasibility study and start football first.
Incarnate Word has a really nice campus and is located a few miles north of downtown San Antonio in a great neighborhood. Despite being private they might be a school that could get an invite to a better conference. UTSA in town is obviously the major school.

West Texas and Azusa Pacific were P schools back in the day? They regularly out draw schools like Miami, Baylor, and others. ESPN will give them the big payday along with NDSU, Eastern Washington, etc. to play with the big boys.
