With Lunsford, there is no "apples to apples" comparison vis a vis Napier.

Lunsford was on staff already and had a relationship with his players
Lunsford had six games a year ago as head coach.

While that certainly doesn't disqualify him, it does debunk the "we went from two wins to nine and you went from five wins to seven."

Napier's job this year was much more difficult, in my opinion.

Like I said, all three are qualified and no one's fans have a right to ***** if their coach isn't selected.

This.

If I had a vote, it would be Napier, Lunsford and Satterfield in that order.

Napier has done more with his roster, and has certainly gotten Louisiana back in the mix right away.

The work Lunsford has done is no less impressive, there is no understating just how horrible the Summers 'structure' undermined a bunch of young players in two recruiting cycles, if not football game season wise. While there has been talent on the roster, the team and scheme was in need of a major overhaul. I think anyone who is a fan can think back of an edition of their own team that didn't perform well, despite being composed of some very good players. Sometimes it is coaching, sometimes it is chemistry, sometimes it is just an intangible variable that average coaches can't rectify.

We still have a pretty young team, battled through some injuries and to end up with a chance at a 10 win season with a reconstituted offensive line on their 4th OL coach in as many seasons is downright remarkable, whether Lunsford wins the COTY or not. Folks outside of the program can talk all day long about the fact that Lunsford did have the end of last season to coach as an interim, but he did so with the remnants of Summers staff (many who KNEW they were getting canned). THIS season has been with HIS staff that he put together, and Lunsford has unified the team.

Satterfield has done everything you would expect him to do, and putting Appalachian State in position to win a 3rd Sun Belt Title in five years in the league is absolutely no small feat. Someone claiming it isn't deserved, wouldn't be given much serious thought.

Lunsford did an amazing job, no one is questioning that. But he knew what he had going into the season. It’s still a huge improvement. Just my opinion is that Napier went in blind to a terrible situation and got them to play as one team. Won 7 games with a depleted roster, walk-in QB and no defense.

It’s just more impressive IMO.
There is no possible way that a 7-6 team wins that award. It’s not like ULL is Georgia State. Lunsford should win unanimously.
If, note I said "if", the Cajuns win the conference I think we all know who wins without a doubt.

It will be announced this week before the game is played.
I respect what Lunsford did at Georgia Southern. No doubt about it.

But Napier took over a team who was coming off of three straight losing seasons, a team on probation, a team that had a divided locker room, and a team with an apathetic fan base which just started to come back around after the win this past Saturday. We have a walk-on starting at QB who wasn't even a starter at his JUCO. We have two walk-ons starting on defense with another starter who transitioned from the offensive side of the ball. And we also have an upcoming recruiting class that is right around the top 50 in the country.

And with all of this, our team is playing in the conference championship this weekend.

Napier pulled all of this off in less than a year. He gets my vote.
I'll say it a little louder for those in the back.

Why don't coaches from consistently good teams get mention for this award? The talk we all had to endure this past offseason was how App State would regress because we lost our QB, many key defenders, and both defensive coordinators. Yet here we are again. Scott Satterfield is the best coach in this conference. He has not won this award yet, despite going 34-6 in Sun Belt play, winning 2 (possibly 3 after this weekend) titles, 3-0 in bowl games, and having 2 (possibly 3 after this weekend) 10-win seasons. Best of luck to Chad and Billy, the new Trent Miles and Paul Petrino.

I'll play. So Tua is the best player in the nation by miles, but we should give the Heisman to Gardner Minshew because his emergence was unexpected?

Then just give coach of the year to the conference champion coach and we'll just forget about the whole exercise.
App is consistent. That goes a long way. Its a credit to SS to keep it at such a high level, but have him come into a situation like GS or La or even state and if he wins 9+ . App has been extremely blessed with stability and that is a compliment. But not had endure anything even remotely close to what these other coaches had to deal with. That is why he isn't in the mix this year. Jmo

It would better to do it that way than the status quo. Otherwise we should rename the award. JMO.

Is it your opinion that a coach who has gone 34-6 over a 5-year span in a conference may have been the best coach in that conference for at least one of those 5 years?

I didn't realize that. Thank you.

Pretty much. Maybe if they would suck every now and again they would be in consideration. Lol

Exactly! Y'all see my point. That's all I'm saying. Seems like a silly award when it's never won by the coach from the best team.

Satterfield did inherit a similar situation from Coach Moore. Things had gone downhill quickly in Moore's last few seasons, and then we had the messy ending to his career that had a major impact on the team. Add in moving up to FBS on top of that. Scott came in and rebuilt our program into a conference power within two years. Pretty impressive.

That doesn't mean he deserves the award this year, but at some point you'd think his efforts would get rewarded with that recognition. It's hard to believe he hasn't won COY yet considering everything his teams have accomplished.

Agree, could go to either. I think GS beating App may have given it to Lunsford if not probably should go to Satt.
Oh, if Lunsford doesn’t get it, the only other guy that should be getting any votes is Satt. I know this award is announced before the bowls, but if GSU wins our bowl game, it will only be the second time, in the history of the game, a team goes from double digit losses to double digit wins

You might want to read his post... "before the bowls" includes all of the time from now until the bowls.

I read his post, genius. But discussing a possible GS bowl win is meaningless to the discussion of the award whenever it gets awarded way before said bowl game is even played.
