Over the last decade, I've been kind of ambivalent about the mascot issue at the College. I liked the old mascots (students dressed as native americans) of the '70s and '80s, but I understand why some people felt they were offensive in this day and age. I honestly didn't care enough to weigh in much. I thought that the mascot process was fairly done a few years ago, and the griffin was acceptable and much better than the alternatives.
But as of today, I'm fully and completely on board with the Griffin.
Why?
I've never met Ethan Brown (who I assume is an undergrad at the College), but his article in the Flat Hat has made me a HUGE (no pun intended) fan of the Griffin, and I intend to start purchasing lots of W&M gear that features the mascot.
Read on, and weep for our youth, who apparently have run out of important issues on which to opine...
But hey, since we've already discussed the cajones on a different thread, can we now have this space as a fantastically named, all-purpose off-topic thread for humor that doesnt need its own entry?
That article definitely massively overstates the level of student "outrage". I'm pretty sure the people who wrote that are the only outraged people. The rest just find it funny, if slightly weird.
I just came over to recon your chatter about BB this year and this thread caught my eye. I'd like to commend our forebears for their vision and leadership in this matter and I'm planning on immediately starting a petition to ADD a set to ODU's Lion statue. Big brass ones that shine when the sun hits them. It's obviously a male lion as it has a mane but to my best recollection is not anatomically correct. It's not right, we're saying he's either been neutered or is just poorly endowed. Not the image we want to portray.
Testicles or no testicles, that is the question. Maybe someday we'll secure a female Griffin stature to place alongside, so, they will be a complete pair, William and Mary!!
I read the Flat Hat online fairly sporadically-- whenever time allows and I'm at a loss for any more useless way of wasting time. Ethan Brown is good for comic relief on the bus ride home from work from time to time. Check out this piece, in which he moans about the walking distance between buildings on our quaint campus: http://flathatnews.com/2018/02/12/underr...ve-spaces/

Methinks Mr. Brown needs to make a visit to Petersburg if he truly believes Jones in any way resembles a prison...
