It was very bad.
03-banghead

Pretty much sums it up. First half was brutal.. how did we let UTEP do that to us?

"Poor coaching" is a massive understatement.
I’m not even mad at bloomgren for losing, I’m mad at how we lost. Green had success throwing downfield, but we wouldn’t do it unless it was 4th and long. And using last timeout on 4th and 20 was inexcusable. Bailiff wins this game and I was not a bailiff fan
We are still trying to put square pegs in round holes. I understand what Bloomgren wants to do, and he could get the talent to do it at Stanford. I'm not sure he can ever recruit what needs to do that at Rice. I don't see the dominant offensive linemen, or the feature running back, or the 4*/5* passing quarterback coming here. Keep in mind that he got to Stanford after David Shaw replaced Jim Harbaugh, so the talent pipeline was already in pretty full flow there. Here there isn't much in that regard, and I don't really know what we have to offer to land those talents.

I still think we are going to have to do something contrarian on offense, do something to get more speed on the field defensively, and upgrade the kicking game even further. I think we really have to ask how long we can use "pound the rock" as our signature strategy.

Bloomgren is well connected to some pretty big names in the coaching profession. I hope he picks their brains to figure out a different approach.

Bailiff doesn't win this game because Bailiff's team would have been even further behind at the half.

This my nomination for most idiotic post of the year. Proof? None.
Would we be happier with Bailiff and 3-9?

We had to make a change.
How bad does it need to get for Karlgaard to be fired?

Bailiff isnt coming back. And he already did his part running the program into the ground.

So it's pointless contrasting the two. The question is, can Bloomgren improve?

The only reason this isnt rock rock bottom is because we still have the Greenspan tenure to permanently bring up the rear.

And yours would be my nominee.
Oh for crying out loud.
It's obvious that our problems run much, much deeper than coaching.
The biggest negative of the day to me -- 30 recruits now won't even consider coming to Rice unless we're their only offer.
We have minimal student support; no band; no crowd; and we'll never[/u] win (even in CUSA) if we are smaller, slower, and less skilled than every team we face.

We have no student support, crowd etc because we have spent decades chasing them away. And anyone who pointed that out was shouted down in the name of "bowl games" and "unprecedented success".

We got out coached today, especially in the first half. UTEP isnt so much more talented than us - they were 0-20 coming into this game including a LOSS to Northern freaking Arizona. If we could score 23 straight in the 2H, we could have done more than 3 in the first.

The onus is on the program to attract fans. Not expect people to show up and watch a losing franchise for years on end just because the program happens to exist. Attendance is earned.

This. I’m much more concerned that we laid an egg in front of a bunch of recruits than anything else. It’s not like Rice football in C-USA as currently assembled is a great product to sell to begin with.

Just (sorta) watched the replay. I couldn't watch it in real time.

For me, this is the lowest point for Rice football in the last 12-15 years.

However, I think we have to give Coach Bloom more than just 10 games before we run him off. As was posted previously today, our problems run deeper than coaching. We've got a long way to go in the talent department.

I'm not happy, but I'm supporting this coaching staff for another season.

I said earlier this year that we can be bad enough for recruits to want to come because they believe they can play immediately. But we can’t be so bad tha a recruit says no way do they want to be in a situation that is hopeless. The first half today was pretty much the second scenario, whether or not the 2nd half comeback erased some of those thoughts we shall see. The next two weeks will not help.

I don’t think Rice’s player skills are significantly worse than last year or UTEP is significantly better, so one could make some slight extrapolations based on last year’s results. If nothing else, what happened in the 1st half cannot he explained by a difference in skill level.

Well most of the good feelings and optimism we had after the two UH games has been throughly washed away. I think what bothers most of us is that we see a staff that continues to do the same thing that has proven unsuccessful over and over again. As I said in a tweet, in whose mind does one think running the wildcat on 1st or 2nd and ten without a passing option is a good idea? And to do it repeatedly.
