Looking at the time line for the succession of coaches at Kentucky and Memphis.....

Tubby Smith (9 years) -- Josh Pastner (7 years)
Billy Gillespie (2 years) -- Tubby Smith (2 years)
Calipari (9 winning years) -- Hardeway ( ? winning years)

Anybody see any potential similarities?

A couple of big differences:

Tubby Smith/Kentucky a lot of NCAA wins -- Josh, few NCAA wins
Billy Gillespie 2 terrible years -- Tubby two meh years
Calipari one NCAA title -- Hardaway, hopefully many.

Orlando inherited team which had gone to finals two out of last three years winning one. Josh inherited team purposely ransacked by previous coach on the way out.

I can't believe all these years later people are still making this idiotic argument

Pastner inherited a TOP 10 NATIONAL PROGRAM

A program that was in the Sweet 16 the year before he took over....was in the National Championship Game the year before that and was in the Elite 8 the 2 years before that.

A program that was putting 16-18k in the arena every damn game no matter who we played. That was handed to Pastner. It was a TOP 10 NATIONAL PROGRAM.

John Calipari left that for Pastner.

That is what Josh Pastner inherited.

I didn't know there were people left who are still dumb enough to make the "Calipari nuked the program" argument, but here we are and we're still hearing this moronic, insane BS.

Stop being idiots. Please.
Well to be fair, it's the same idiots every time anyway.

Pastner admitted helping Cal call recruits to tell them they were UK bound.
This was before he was hired as Memphis head coach.
Afterwards, he couldn't just call them back and tell them nm.

What Paz was left holding, was not a top 10 program.
Not even top 25.

You're talking financials....I'm talking team perception/rankings.
Get your head out of the sand.
Cal did what he could walking out the door to make us irrelevant after he left.
I live in the state where he now coaches.
I heard his speeches.
He complained that Memphis "made" him sell tickets to the games.

Remember him telling us if we hired Barbee, he "might" leave us some players?
No you're talking strictly players on the roster (I hope)

Because everything Cal built and turned over to Pastner allowed him to continue to recruit to a top 10 program and play in front of 16k fans.

That is the PROGRAM that was handed over to Opie.

TOP TEN
Calipari took the recruits and the snow cone machine but everything else was intact for the next coach to succeed. We had the fanbase, facilities, and national appeal. JP was able to snag a top 10 recruiting class with momentum we had. Two bad coaching hires were made. One coach dug the grave and the other buried it.

He talked with our top returning big man AFTER HE HAD TAKEN UK JOB and suggested the player leave early for the draft. 7 of the 15 players on the 2008-09 team left. 4 of 7 were underclassmen. Not counting the massive recruiting class.

Top 10?

Top 10 is just not true...Was it nuked...Hell No, it was likely in the best shape it was in in decades

Facilities were top 20...Attendance\Fan Support likely was close to top 10

Conference affiliation is huge for your PROGRAM and we were still in C-USA at the time so that really knocks down our profile.

As soon as Cal bolted, we were no longer a top 10 program. Hell, we had to hire the Boy Wonder to coach the team, no one else wanted the job.
