As a slight, most have said at one time or another that we are so and so's homecoming game or super bowl, implying that playing us is the biggest thing on their schedule. Well, this year Miami of Ohio leaves no doubt. We play them opening weekend and they have made it their actual homecoming game. I have never seen that before.

Never heard of it being that early into the year, college or high school.

They don't have another home game until 9/29 so not sure if that has something to do with it. Also when a team schedule's another for their "homecoming" it's not because they think that game is their superbowl...but usually the thinking is that is a game the Home team can EASILY win. It's anything but a compliment to the visiting team.
Here's the problem for Miami...

They are in the MAC, so there's no such thing as a November home game anymore. That means Miami has 3 Saturday football home games this year...
9/1 vs. Marshall
9/29 vs. Western Michigan
10/13 vs. Kent State
… and Miami's Fall Break bookends 10/13, so that destroys that weekend to do any thing with Parent's Weekend or Homecoming.

That leaves two games for Parent's Weekend and Homecoming. And Parent's Weekend doesn't make sense on Labor Day Weekend at the start of the year, so the decision seems to have been made for them. The lesson to learn here - don't ever be a part of the MAC.

I thought there was a Marshall fan contingent who want back in the MAC?

Where have you ever seen that. Not one school wanted us there, they looked as if we were coming to steal something from them. The day we finally accepted an invite Ohio's Coach at the time Jim Grobe (Huntington Native) told his school newspaper "You just let the fox in the hen house, you never let the fox in". When we announced we were leaving for CUSA Kent State's president stood up at the annual MAC conference meeting and said the MAC should bar Marshall from any revenue, TV and championships. We even had a Miami OH fan put up a website to where everyone could dedicate their haiku to Marshall at wehatemarshall.com. Even though we left in 2005, the web domain stayed up until it expired sometime in 2009.

Yeah that makes sense but sucks. Usually, as others have said you host someone you can beat or would be less of a draw for fans. Marshall on opening weekend seems like it would bring in some fans so it would have been better to have on another weekend.

The fact is this will probably be their best attended game of the year. The only other two games that may top it is Cincy the next week but Cincy has struggled the last few years or Ohio on Nov 7th, it will probably be tooooo cold or at least that will be the excuse for that game and Ohio would have to be doing pretty good to travel to the game.
