Revenue distribution up 2000%. Please share the numbers with us. Haven't seen this statement before.

Moved the basketball tournament to New Orleans, home of the conference office from Hot Springs, and its been a poor choice each year. Hot Springs had a natural tourist draw, greater attendance by far, more central location, and more courts providing for both womens and mens tournments during the same week.

Officials and discipline? Like the time the officials determined in review that a key Arkansas State player had not gone with his helmet but Karl decided he knew more than the officials and overturned the ruling resulting in State losing its player.

Ok, you will miss the chats and his good friendship. Show him some love and give him a pat on the the back for asking ESPN to call your team Louisana. But I think I will give a pat on the back to the presidents and chancellors for keeping Karl on a narrow road, improving the conference standing and possibly preventing another conference downfall.

How exactly is Hot Springs a bigger tourist draw than NOLA? If it wasn't for this board I would have no idea it existed.

Because it’s closer to Jonesboro

It's not that Hot Springs was a bigger tourist draw (It isn't) It was that we chose to move to Lakefront Arena of all places, which was as far as humanly possible away from the tourist parts of New Orleans. Playing the tournament in New Orleans is fine. Playing it at Lakefront was a joke

We've long needed to recognize that no one attends the conference basketball tournament anymore, and needed to move the Early rounds to campus sites and rent out Smoothie King for the last two rounds. Again, he eventually got us there, it just took a lot of time.

Plus...the break up with Hot Springs was unnecessarily messy. League will never be able to go back there.
The college football playoff which he had zero to do with is one main reason distribution is up. Not to mention the growth of college football that would happen if a mannequin was put behind a desk and we called it the commissioner. Is the Sun Belt better off than when he took over? Maybe but how much is attributable to him vs just things just happening or the schools is the debate. Giving him credit of all good things just because he was the commissioner is a little disingenuous. My biggest gripe is he was 100% ok with whatever was shoved down our throats whether it be ESPN or the P5 then telling us how lucky were to get what we were getting while being unfairly banned from the table. Not very inspiring. UCF pres may have gotten over his skis but at least he went to bat for his school and conference and pushes back when justified.
Hot Springs is a water feature

I did not say it was a bigger draw. I said it was a natural draw. Why? It is a city of real natural beauty, located in the nations first national park (called a reservation at that time) which houses natural thermal hot springs mineral waters throughout the park. It still is home to several bath houses that have existed from the 1900's ( some still active) and was one of the nations most popular resort through the 1930's. This is where all the sports stars of that era came for the healing waters including major league baseball and Babe Ruth, the greatest boxing names in the business along with movie stars and starlets. The winter home of Al Capone and other mobsters who were welcomed by the sherriff and was promised to keep it clean and no business while they were there, home of Oaklawn Park which is one of highest attended race track and gambling centers, featues a large 30 mile boating lake which goes right through the town. At one time, it was the nations largest city of illegal gambling in the nation and planners were going to develop it to top Vegas if the state would allow it which the voters would not. Visitors from all across the country still visit for the above and its abundance history. The list could go on.
Still waiting. What did Benson do to increase revenue distribution 2000%?

He didn't do much. He was in charge at a time when several teams put some real money into their athletic programs and hired forward thinking planners as their respective presidents. The conference emergence was the result of that.....not so much him. The playoff and subsequent money, as you said, had nothing to do with him.

Some good things happened while he was at the helm, although probably not because of him. To me, he seemed outdated from the moment he began. I personally didn't like him as our commissioner, but he didn't kill the conference (which was a real concern of mine for a while). I wish him well in his next endeavor.

And NO.....can't have Mohajir!!! He is far more important to our Athletic Dept. than any of our coaching staff.
You guys are idiots if you believe the belt isn’t in better shape under his leadership that under Wrong waters. Either you were not around under his time or you were not paying attention

Never said that. Waters should have never been given the job. We are no longer seen as an upstart conference and as we put money into our programs we will continue to see the results.

The question is "what did Karl Benson do to increase conference revenue distribution to the member schools 2000%"? That is the question. The poster said it, I want him to back it up with facts.
During realignment, the SBC brought in adds that add value to our TVdeal; either via quality "on the field" history or markets, and then avoided diluting this product with dead weight for the sake of adding dead weight and reducing per school payouts.

We got a lot of money from the CFP by being a decent G5 conference and have negotiated a better tv contract than CUSA.

Whether you attribute this to Benson or not is likely a matter of perspective, but the aforementioned improvements are a matter of fact.

The conference improved tremendously under his tenure.
Wow! Ark St fans are sensitive over everything these days.

Yeah! Want to make something of it? 03-hissyfit03-hissyfit03-hissyfit04-chairshot04-chairshot04-chairshot04-chairshot03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao
Teams moving up from FCS don't usually have much choice in where they go. There are only a certain number of openings. We had 4 due to CUSA's expansion. Benson has been drooling over Liberty's money for some time now and we are fortunate the president's are on top of things.

Dude, you ought to witness some of the petty fights on our board if you think this is bad! We fight much more amongst ourselves.
Karl Benson reached out to Coastal for membership in the league so he'll always be cool in my book! I hope we get some leadership moving forward that continues to position Sun Belt competitively among the other Group of Five conferences.

No, this State poster simply wants one to back up his statements with the facts. Is that an unkind thing to do these days?
