Just got this

Quote:Dear Rice Owls Family –

I hope everyone is doing well as we approach the end of the summer. We are feeling tremendous optimism entering the 2018-2019 season and are thankful to have such great supporters like you behind us.

I’m writing to ask for your input on an important project. With the recent introduction of the Rice University Vision for the Second Century, Second Decade (V2C2), we are in process of developing a strategic plan specific to Rice Athletics. The objective of our plan is to ensure our department is focused on the right set of strategic priorities for the next five years and beyond. We are asking you, as key constituents of our athletics department, to complete a short survey so we can capture your input as we finalize the plan. The survey should take no more than five to ten minutes and can be accessed by clicking here.

Thank you for your help, and we look forward to seeing you at a Rice Athletics event this year.

Go Owls!

Joe Karlgaard
Director of Athletics
Filled out the survey and volunteered to help out further. Somehow doubt they'll ask.
Filled out the survey but did not volunteer.
Did the same.
filled out the survey
Filled it out and offered to volunteer.
Filled out.
Complained about
- conference affiliation
- viewing options for out-of-towners (I'm actually a fan of these Twitter and Facebook broadcasts)
- branding (need to play up nerdy/uniqueness, maybe even underdog, angles)
Ummmm... didn't get a survey. Guess I should donate more money. Lol

I agree with your first two... Twitter/Facebook >>> ESPN+ IMO.

I disagree about the branding part w/r/t to nerdiness... People already associate Rice with nerds. Maybe the underdog part... I personally think we need to take on UH and be more aggressive in marketing to the city of Houston, not just the upper crust of West U, Memorial, etc...

"People already associate..."
Exactly. That's our uniqueness, and it can be made into a PLUS.
Indeed, that's presumably the whole idea behind "INTELLECTUAL brutality"

Nerdiness need not imply upper crust of West U. In fact, I'm not sure the upper crust of West U is looking to cheer for nerds at all

As long as we don't park on their streets...
I like "Intellectual Brutality," particularly as a recruiting tool. I'm not sure that "Nerdy brutality" has the same ring.
I received it, filled it out and offered to volunteer as well.
I completed it. I especially emphasized the need for an urgent upgrade of the gameday experience, including urgent intensive care for the MOB.
If this student body in any way resembles the Rice I knew, then there is a wealth of creativity waiting to be tapped. Much more could be said about this....perhaps another thread if anyone was interested.

The athletic department can’t do anything to help the MOB’s enrollment. They are too far on the weird end of the social spectrum even for the Rice student body these days.
If we’re going to play up the nerdy angle why don’t we get ahead of the next wave of realignment (online content).

I know Bloomgren is a tech fan and our dean of engineering is a big sports fan, why don’t we have the engineering school have a project where we work closely with Google/Samsung/Facebook and develop a better platform for broadcasting sports for VR. As part of the deal they preload our content into their VR store. There’s something to be said for availability. How many people became Braves fans because they could watch them every night on TBS? I know they can do it already, so why not invest a couple hundred thousand dollars and make our content the only VR sports readily available (and improve it).

Strivr might even want to be a 3rd partner for it.

Should we have varsity eSports by now?

I mentioned that on here a few years ago. Yes we should have a team.

Maybe we should think about it. It is going to be HUGE. My son interned for a pittsburgh eports franchise this summer. They recently played a tournament of the top 20 esports teams in the world in berlin and it was viewed by 60 million people. Yes, you read that right.

Owl95 mentioned this to us when were in Las Vegas for basketball last year. His comments then have proven completely accurate.
