Today, let's talk Rice. The Owls seem to be moving towards a Stanford style of offense. And, Rice only recruits smart players, so they should be able to master the system. But, in a state where high schools focus on the spread, Rice may have to cast a wider recruiting net before they sees the system produce a winning season.

Which games do you feel they will win, and which should they lose? What is the logic for your predictions?

Here is the schedule with my predictions. C-USA fans, I look forward to reading your thoughts.

W- Prairie View A&M (Local FCS program)
L- Houston (Easy Bayou Bucket win for UofH)
L- @ Hawaii (Hawaii is bad, but playing @ home)
L-@ Southern Miss (Bad road loss)
L- @ Wake Forest (Wake is good, and Rice will be playing their 3rd straight road game)
L- UTSA (The Runners have defense)
L- UAB (UAB could be the best team in C-USA West)
L- @ FIU (Davis is turning FIU around)
L- @ North Texas (Too much offense)
W- UTEP (Might be the pillow fight of the week)
L- @ LA Tech (Dawgs are a good bowl team)
L- @ LSU (Should be an embarrassing loss)
L- ODU (ODU could be playing for a 7th win)
W- Prairie View A&M (Rice overlooks them but still wins a close one)
W- Houston (UofH overlooks Rice and gets burned)
W- @ Hawaii (Rice is 1-0 on the island in last 5 years)
W-@ Southern Miss (Bit of a barnburner but Eagles can’t stop Rice ball control when it counts)
L- @ Wake Forest (Owls haven’t won a road P5 game in 8 years)
L- UTSA (Roadrunners Win turnover battle running away, otherwise close match)
W- UAB (Back on winning track to stay in title contention)
L- @ FIU (Would be tough to pull this one off)
W- @ North Texas (Rare Conference road shutout has prognosticators scratching their heads. Rice does not require 8 downs to score game’s only TD in 13-0 win)
W- UTEP (Owls overlook Miners and still win by 3 1/2 TDS)
W- @ LA Tech (Rice completes comeback 4OT win 65-59)
L- @ LSU (not an embarrassing loss. But game not in doubt by 4Q)
W- ODU (Owls clinch west title with a little tiebreaker help)
clt really thinks that Charlotte will beat odu this year
Four wins : PVAM, UAB, UTEP, ODU
Four wins:

In order of probability, PVAM, UTEP, someone else, someone else.

clt says norm is mute.
It will be a tough schedule for sure with Back-to-back UH’s early and back-to-back non-flagship Louisiana’s late.

Luckily we don’t have to play our non-flagship UT’s back to back.
Well, all I have to say is, with all these schedule breakdowns, we all need to get better schedulers. When every school has a schedule breakdown, something is wrong!

It’s all right if you love me
It’s all right if you don’t
I’m not afraid of you running away
Honey, I get the feeling you won’t
Rice will destroy the mean green, and rice has all the gravitas because rice has been playing football for like a year longer than NT
Just say’n
I believe the power running game offense can work for Rice but there are some issues. Like any school it comes down to recruiting. McCarney had one great year at UNT with a power rushing attack but things quickly fell apart once the previous coach's players graduated. McCarney was doomed not by the style of offense but by awful recruiting.

Four wins would be a really good season considering the schedule and the coaching change.
Joe, I really believe Rice is hard to predict this year, but for now, I wouldn't change a thing you predicted.

All the gravitas. And most of the fajitas, too.
The mean green does have a mean guacamole however, so it should be interesting.
In two years Rice will be pushing the Eagles around. North Texas is a finesse team. Rice is being built around offensive power and defensive speed. Enjoy it while you can UNT. You guys are too small. It showed badly in the New Orleans Bowl. You guys were manhandled.

That is what McCarney did when he was coaching North Texas. It worked for one season, and then it didn't. If Rice can bring in the right recruits for the system it could work, just like it has for Stanford. But, Rice will have to do a good deal of recruiting outside of Texas in order to get most of the players needed. Most kids of the kids in Texas come out of spread systems.

Both FAU and Troy were bigger, faster, and stronger then us last season. That didn't go unnoticed by our fans our athletic department, and is being addressed through recruiting and juco transfers.

In two years our current #1 ranked C-USA recruiting class will be contributing on the field, so I don't know that Rice will be pushing us around. But, I certainly look forward to attending our match-ups.
Bring it baby!

I’m not sure about pushing UNT around but we are definitely going for the Stanford model and have the academic pull to get the next 20 kids each year Stanford doesn’t want. Bailiff exclusively recruited Texas pretty much, with 1 or 2 from Louisiana or Canada.

Bloomgren’s short time filling the 2018 class:
TX, LA, FL, MO, NY, CA, SC, MN (mr football)

2019 class so far (9 commits)
TX, OH, NJ, CT with offers out to guys from several other states + Belgium
