Richmond looking to replace the Coliseum. What are we doing?

They have not decided on what they will do with Scope yet. But they did recently replace the video board outside of the arena. It looks nice.

Point was, if we're ranked ahead of Richmond as 3rd most appealing place for NBA expansion why are they seriously thinking of replacing the arena so they can draw NCAA, NBA, etc., while we dick around, city by city, on these projects? It's pointless, because the lunkheads we elect over and over don't know how and/or don't want to work for the common good.

What was the last city who built an arena without an occupant before the team moved there? I know Kansas City tried it and failed.

Do you think Richmond is going to draw in an NBA franchise? That seems pretty much like it has zero chance of happening.

That arena was home to Oklahoma State hoops.

I'd say the Las Vegas Knights' for the NHL. Though LV is a totally different dynamic. That arena also hosts a lot of UFC events, concerts and boxing matches.

The Hornets would be the last for the NBA. They did have an ECHL tenant when that stadium was built but so do we. I would also note that was a special circumstance considering the legal issues George Shinn was facing in Charlotte.

More important question, what billionaire would buy a team to bring here? I don't see any obvious answers. And our attendance to minor league events don't really inspire confidence in an outside investor to do so.

Was Sprint Arena built with the primary goal of attracting a major-league team? I was under the impression KC did it for the same reason Richmond might and Norfolk should, that its existing multipurpose arena was long in the tooth and needed to be replaced regardless the prospects of an NBA or NHL franchise calling it home. They definitely seem to be doing fine as far as filling dates, though it also helps that they're the long-term host of the Big 12 men's basketball tournament.

I think Richmond's aiming more for NCAA/ACC/A-10 tournaments and a better class of concerts, effectively usurping JPJ's role in the central part of the state. I doubt there's a reasonable goal of an NBA or NHL team in mind, but they already have the RC at 12,500 for hoops so 17,000 isn't THAT much of a leap; it's not like they're looking to replace the Ashe Center with it.

Agreed that they have no issue filling in their schedule. But yeah, it was built partly with the goal of drawing an NHL or NBA franchise. Though keeping the Big 12 happy and replacing Kemper played parts as well.

And while the Sprint Center can be called a success, they have things we don't in Norfolk. They already had the Big 12. They also have major league teams. They have more fortune 500 companies. They aren't at the end of a culdesac. And they arent competing with 6 other cities for the local's dollar.

I spoke with someone close to arena project and they said until laws get passed that make it easier this area working together will go nowhere. What those laws would like like I'm not sure.
