Does it really make a difference if kids are being ripped away from their parents at ICE control points or at railway sidings. This policy is the equivalent of if the US told Jewish refugees fleeing the pogroms of the Kristallnacht...'no room at the inn, go back to your death'. Which is actually what the US did, to our eternal shame then...and our eternal shame now.
Applying for asylum is not against the law. But lets not kid ourselves. Trump and ALL of his supporters now are in favor of using children as hostages and using inhumane treatment of children (!) as a deterrent to asylum requests. If I were involved in this in any way, I'd start to read up on the Crimes against Humanity caselaw.
These "baby jails" havent been fully vetted by non-Trumpers. The facility in Brownsville had a full week to clean it up after they refused the visit of Senator Merkeley.
This is going to be a scandal that will make Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina look tame in comparison.

From a moral issue, this involves the following
1) Confirmation of the racist character of the Republican Party.
2) The end to any pretense by the evangelical supporters of Donald Trump that they care about parental rights, the safety of children, or that their claims that children belong with a mother and father aren't completely bogus and rooted solely in attacks on LGBT persons

From a political standpoint, this is really counterproductive.
Its not going to be hard to find multiple stories that are just heartbreaking. From the disabled kid ripped from his only parent who is in severe crisis right now in ICE custody, to the kids who are experiencing documented mental anguish as a result of the separation, to the kids who are being bullied by other kids. You realize that a distraught or crying 4 year old cannot be hugged while in ICE custody? Add massive levels of untrained and unvetted 'jailers' oops I mean caregivers and you've got a recipe for some real scandals to come.
People are REALLY pissed over this. I mean in the 'making me look moderate' level of pissed. And many of the furious ones aren't just the 'never GOPers' etiher. Every single Congressional Candidate will be asked to publicly announce whether they'll sign the 'stand alone' stop separation bill discharge petition too.
Every Congressional Candidate is going to have to make a stand on this issue. And many of them will have to do so BEFORE the Republican primary/runoff.
Few are buying that this is the Democrats fault. The GOP holds control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency. They could end this, and the DACA crisis if they wanted to. Without any Democratic support.
The GOP gains nothing from this, politically. There's about 20 GOP seats that are put in significantly more jeopardy than before because of this. And these are seats that are at risk. If there's any benefit for the GOP anywhere, its not coming in toss up seats.

Applying for asylum at the US border is NOT against the law.

Finally, this policy doesn't really stop asylum seekers either. If you're being threatened with death by Honduran gangs, and the Honduran state cannot (or in the case of many women, or LGBT persons, will not) protect you, then you go to the border anyway. But this 'cruelty to small non-white children policy' makes racists on 4chan happy I suppose.
