Headed to LA for the UCLA game, Thursday though Monday. I have no idea where to stay. Looks like Korea Town is cheap and close to the RoseBowl, Dodger Stadium, and the Comedy Store. Would that be an unwise idea? Is there any other suggestions?
Koreatown is urban, but not particularly unsafe. As you note, it's close to a ton of attractions, but not necessarily the Rose Bowl. It is, of course, much closer to the Rose Bowl than if you stay in Santa Monica, Venice, etc. It's also quite close to USC and Expo Park, which has the LA Coliseum, new soccer stadium, and a few museums. Koreatown also has some great Asian restaurants, and is super close to some of my LA favorite restaurants - Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles (soul food heaven), Gueleguatza (incredible Oaxacan in a fun environment - think moles), and the best ******* street tacos in LA - El Chato Taco Truck.

Good thread... Keep this going. My wife is supposed to go back to work from maternity leave in a few weeks. She is too worried about that and using her days for our 2 month old to consider the trip right now, but I've been putting some itineraries together to broach the subject if things go well her first month or so back to work.
What are people's thoughts on staying in Pasadena? Hotels seem reasonable there. I was considering spending Friday night and Saturday night there and going somewhere else for Sunday night. Is there enough to do Friday in reasonable distance to warrant that. I figured Saturday will be about UC football anyways. What are the things we need to do Friday and Sunday if we're in LA?
Mark, the Getty Museum, just north of the UCLA campus, is incredible, and it's free. We were down there in April and only able to spend about three hours at the museum, but could have easily spent a day. The views of the city and the coast are breathtaking, and the museum's architecture and gardens are worth a visit alone.
Although somewhat trite, the beach between Santa Monica and Venice is pretty damn entertaining. We rented bikes, and the people-watching alone was worth it. Venice also has Firestone Walker Brewery (one of my Cali favorites) and a strip of shops and restaurants (Abbott Kinney Road) that are quite good. I really don't know much about Pasadena, but it does abut the Angeles National Forest, which has some great hiking, if that's your thing.

I work in LA. I'd stay in Pasadena if I were coming in for the game. You can always drive over to Koreatown or any other hip area to check it out. Pasadena is clean, safe, has good restaurants, and a neat downtown area. I'd avoid Santa Monica/Veince just because of the traffic alone.
That said, it's hard not to recommend staying by the beach. Most LA County beach cities are great, and many have their own vibe. If you're lookcing for the beach, I'd recommend Hermosa/Redondo Beach since it's less busy than Santa Monica.

I work in LA. I'd stay in Pasadena if I were coming in for the game. You can always drive over to Koreatown or any other hip area to check it out. Pasadena is clean, safe, has good restaurants, and a neat downtown area. I'd avoid Santa Monica/Veince just because of the traffic alone.
That said, it's hard not to recommend staying by the beach. Most LA County beach cities are great, and many have their own vibe. If you're lookcing for the beach, I'd recommend Hermosa/Redondo Beach since it's less busy than Santa Monica.
Thanks. My plan was to stay by the beach one night provided I can convince my wife to go (hell two nights if she'll take an extra day). I'll look into those spots.
Thank you guys for the help! I was able to grab JJ Grand for $75/night, so I just did that. I’m going with my brother. He’s a little younger, so I didn’t want to hit him with too big of bill. We were able to get airfare and hotel (4 nights) for $480 each total. I felt pretty good about that. Hopefully he Hotel isn’t too bad.
I contacted the UC ticket office. They said the UCLA tickets will be on sale 7/31.

Tickets will be easy to get and should be cheap, either through UC or certainly open market.

Solid choice. If you're a beer drinker, there's a great new tap house near there called The Southland. They focus on LA-area craft beers. Just get ready to pay LA prices for beer.
Make sure to find a highly rated dive taco place that sells baja fish tacos.
That is the thing I miss the most about no longer living in the LA area.

San Diegans claim that fish tacos are a San Diego thing.
I lived there for three years (just left) and I never understood what the big deal was about fish tacos. To me it seems a lot like Skyline - it's delicious if you grew up with it, but it's never going to take the world by storm.

I lived in SoCal for 28 years. My wife's family lives in Orange County. Which is why we will be staying at the Hampton Inn Hermoso Beach. : )
Downtown Pasadena is kind of like OTR. Except without any poor people.

Went to see Lyle's first game at Fresno St. I had a good time. Won't be going to the UCLA game. I find LA overrated. Anyone else agree?
