I really like this idea. It makes it very important to enter the last third of the season in the top five and preferably the top two of the conference standings. This series of games will make or break a few teams seasons.

Well this is interesting.
So this could cause 2 teams to play each other as many as 4 times (3 in regular season and one in the CUSAT), which is not a big deal.
Looking at the history, it appears that going 5 deep will ensure the top 2 RPI teams will get into the mix.

This may be the smartest thing CUSA has done since we joined the conference.

Great.
Now they need to fix the tournament. They need to divide the East and West, with the top seed in each hosting. Then the championship can be played at the site of the highest remaining seed.
Would fix both travel issues as well as fan involvement.
Granted, it would've sucked last year when the top 4 teams were all in the East, but...

This new plan is a gimmick and as such any positive effect will be short-lived. The big boys want all NCAA slots for themselves. Whatever we do short of actually kicking down the door will be for naught as they will just invent some new metric to exclude us. And they will do it without a bit of sorrow. I will not delude myself into thinking that we can beat this rigged system.
05-29-2018, 03:30 PM
Rigged system or not, this will surely make the end of the season much better than it currently is. Assuming we are a top 5 team we get to play all the top teams again instead of the bottom feeders who drain RPI. I mean, if you want to really say it, you could say us going 0-3 against WKU and MTSU probably doesn't make our chances any better, no. But I'd rather play WKU and MTSU again over the sub 300 teams who are on the schedule normally.

Agree, I'd much rather play MTSU and WKU at the Ted the last week of the season as opposed to F_U. I like the concept for that reason, but it still won't result in at-large bids or better seeding.

This will be an all time back fire.
This is the NCAA selection committee we are talking about.
We are literally handing them the excuse to exclude our top teams.
In a fair and equitable college basketball landscape, this is a great move.
In the NCAA as it currently exists, this is just another easy excuse for them to exclude middle or wku should they got “2-2” down the stretch.
I get why fans who live in a bubble like this plan......those of us who see the bigger picture realize this isn’t going to work out in cusa’s Favor. If anything it will just piss the NCAA off and give them and even bigger reason to say FU.
Btw the article has a photo of Memphis in it. Memphis hasn’t been in CUSA in years lol.

It seems to me that if after 7 weeks, you are in the 6-10 club, yet by the end of the season you have worked your way up to the fifth best record, you should be the fifth seed.
Likewise if you are in the top five, but lose every game in the final three weeks and drop out, you shouldn't be rewarded with a top five seed.

Couldn't agree more. Two of our last 4 games this past season were Marshall and WKY which we split on the road. Suppose we had the same scenarios next season and they came to our place for the last two games and we won both games on our home court. It would be great for fan support but it would have done nothing to help our post season unless we got to the championship game of the tournament. I like playing the better teams but I don't see where it does anything for post season exposure. All this does is show what a crappy conference this really is.

At least it will make the committee move the goal posts again. Right now lets say the 1 seed is 13-1, and RPI of 38 going into the last game and they have say 10 quad 1 and 2 wins and then they end the season 16-2 going into the CUSA tourn, they would most likely pick up at least 2 more quad 1 and 2 wins. Their RPI isn't dropping like a stone and they are still 38 or higher and no lower than 40 probably.
Now lets say the 2 seed is 12-2 and an RPI of 45 up to that point with 9 and 1 and 2 wins and goes 4-0 the last 2 weeks and picks up 4 more quad 1 and 2 wins to finish at 13 quad 1 and 2 wins. And an RPI of say 37.
The committee will then either have to give an at large to the 2nd team or move the goal posts again and explain why or get rid of the stupid quad system.
At least the conference is willing to try something new and innovative.

Here is something innovative we could try. We could just get better! But even then a 9th place team from the Big Ten is more appealing to the NCAA than the best we have. And that's the truth and the reality.
