Saw another article on this earlier today. Sounds like Nebraska is a likely landing point with the new coach Frost and the fact that Burrow's father and brothers played previously for the Cornhuskers. Would love it if CLF could pull a rabbit out of a hat and land this kid because he is eligible to play this coming season. I'm not counting on it though.

Based upon the article and my current understanding, OSU can withhold permission from certain schools. I suspect that list has a good chance of including the rest of the Big 10 which obviously would eliminate Nebraska unless Burrow wanted to sit out 1 to play 1 instead.

Good point but then you get into the narrative of the big, powerful, rich school controlling where a non-starter transfers. That would take a big sack for Ohio State to tell this kid he can't play where his father and brothers did but then again...

Burrow Transfer CBS Sports Article

OSU is essentially the big sack of Ohio and never lets anyone forget it, so there is no surprise that it doth swingeth in this matter as well.

This should be bulletin material for the next kid that is balancing a scholarship at UC and OSU. The buckeyes have essentially stashed this kid on their bench for several years and are now narrowing his ability to play elsewhere.

Not only is he allowed to play next season, he has two seasons of eligibility left.

This would be a situation where having an O$U connection with our coach could be an advantage, but I don't think it's going to be enough now.

While we used to carry clout enough (even as a G5) to possibly swing this guy, I think the Kiel situation perpetrated by coach Andy Griffith ruined any cred we had.

The guy IS from Ohio, though.

I'm not sure if any prospect is going to even know who Gunner Kiel is. I would think this kid is going to be comfortable with what he's familiar with, and he has an immediate opportunity to start here at UC with someone who used to be a coach on his team. We've got a shot, though I'm not sure of the likelihood.

I mean, the Gunner Kiel fiasco was orchestrated by a coaching staff that isn't even remotely a part of this program anymore. If Burrow were to look at Kentucky, where Gran/Hinshaw are, he might ask that question. But for UC, I doubt that concern even comes up in the conversation.

Exactly. That's who you'd bring that question up to. Not someone at UC who wasn't around when Kiel was.
I hope we can overcome our conference situation with this one . Coming from Ohio State, Im sure this kid would like to showcase his talents on a SEC or Big 10 type stage. We've got the Ohio and Fickell connection in our column . Is it enough?

The fact that we can even entertain this possibility is encouraging! If Tommy Fife was still here...

Hey Joe! Look right down I-71. See all the folks waving their arms?!

Quote:Florida’s Dan Mullen says nothing new on grad transfer front after Joe Burrow announcement

A day after Florida coach Dan Mullen said the Gators weren’t looking at graduate transfer quarterback options at the time, Ohio State QB Joe Burrow made the announcement many were anticipating.

Burrow posted on Twitter on Tuesday that he will leave the Buckeyes and look for a new school, where he’ll be able to play immediately as a graduate transfer with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

While he couldn’t specifically address Burrow, Mullen was asked Tuesday night before his speaking appearance in Fort Lauderdale whether anything had changed as far as his interest in looking into a grad transfer QB.

“No, it really hasn’t. One of the things we do is we look, we evaluate everybody that may transfer as grad transfers and we try to look and say hey, what’s the need, how do they fit our program?” Mullen said. “Are they a one-year or two-year transfer? That’s a big deal too because you’re looking short-term, long-term. So it really hasn’t changed for us.”

Mullen was peppered with a number of questions on the matter, and he reiterated that he’s comfortable going into the season with three scholarship quarterbacks, which is the case for Florida following redshirt freshman Jake Allen’s decision to transfer after spring practice.

No Gatorville?
I would almost rather have a good JUCO OL who is ready to be a 3 year starter than yet another QB. Hayden makes dumb decisions, but I think he would be quite serviceable against the AAC if our OL was even just average. Our OL is just so bad...

And I'm not convinced that wearing a scarlet and gray uniform for a few years automatically puts you head and shoulders above the AAC. I'm sure he would do better than Hayden in any given scenario, but Hayden isn't the biggest problem IMO.

It's called negative recruiting.

Burrow: "You know, I'm actually considering Cincinnati."

LSU/Florida/Nebraska: "You don't want to go there. Let me tell you what happened to a guy named Gunner Kiel when he went there."

Say Kiel had actually developed here and went on to be a 1st round draft pick, you don't think the current UC staff wouldn't tell a kid that UC can get you to the NFL??? Gunner Kiel got there from here.

...it's all probably a moot point anyway.
Joe Burrow is really, really good. He would absolutely tear it up in the AAC and would pull us out of rebuilding mode immediately. With him at QB, you're looking at 8-9 wins next year and competing for the AAC Championship in 2019. Coach Fickell is going to pull out all the stops to try to make this happen.

True but you take talent when and where you can get it. Competition, competition, competition. As several have posted, this is probably a pipe dream at best. Hayden or bust!

He makes the offense relevant immediately. The defense is still really young especially the back of the defense. I'm skeptical they'll be much better than last year on that side of the ball.

I'd rather have a million dollars land in my lap than get this guy, but only one is even an option. Is there even any good JUCO OL available?
What's the Nebraska QB situation?
I'm sure someone is pointing out to Burrow, that UC plays Ohio State AT Ohio State the 2nd game in 2019...

According to this article from yesterday, not favorable to Joe Burrow.

Quote:McKewon: Joe Burrow is leaving Ohio State. Should Nebraska pursue him?

Before NU’s spring practices commenced, I thought Burrow was a decent consideration for the Huskers. After hearing Scott Frost’s thoughts on his quarterbacks, gathering intel from players and coaches and watching the spring game — well, I wrote a Monday Rewind that suggested Nebraska didn’t need to pursue Burrow or any other quarterback.

Some of that was rooted in true freshman Adrian Martinez’s potential. The handful of runs in the spring game — plus comments by his own teammates throughout the spring — indicated to me that a two-year stint of Burrow may not be worth what Martinez can become over that period — and, more important, what he could become with game experience.

If, for whatever reason, Martinez can’t reach that ceiling quickly — injury, accuracy struggles, whatever — Frost appears to like what he has in Tristan Gebbia, Andrew Bunch and Noah Vedral.

Burrow and Gebbia, currently a redshirt freshman, strike me as comparable. Gebbia is probably a better runner than he’s been given credit for, and he’s popular among teammates. Bunch showed in the spring game that he’s more than serviceable in this offense and could go win a game in a pinch. Vedral likely won’t be eligible this season, but he’ll have three years of eligibility left starting in 2019.

Frost has to like how it all sets up. Two quarterbacks — in Bunch and Vedral — who are long-term guys in Lincoln, plus Gebbia and Martinez.

You weigh all that against what Burrow could provide in the short term, and it seems clear: Maybe another school, in the SEC or elsewhere, would be a better fit.
