Somedays a lot happens before you wake up.

New Mascot
Weird. If it was just all in good fun, why would they delete it? Gained a lot of traction, that's for sure. Wanted or unwanted attention, Toledo was trending on Twitter.
It was a topic of conversation on the Scott Van Pelt show (ESPN) this morning...not sure what UT was trying to accomplish here.
Got them national notice!04-cheers

Maybe BG should be the Tweety Birds.

I'm in the same boat. Why delete it?? Everybody knows that you won't actually be able to change the mascot (at minimum, Rocky and Rocksy are much cheaper that paying royalties and licensing for Shrek), but it was in good fun that was being spread around pretty organically. Why take it down??

Maybe they got a e-mail from Dreamworks legal.
If I were to guess the reason for the retreat, I'd say because fear it might hit its goal and then what? They can't actually use Shrek and Fiona, it's trademarked. And it would be a HUGE step down from the present mascots.

But it does seem like some fun went on.

Maybe we can at least get a tag-team match out of it?

I notice a familiar (maiden?) name on the director of marketing who came up with the idea. My google on the person that came up with this idea, led to a very fun page on UT traditions. So... something is going right.

Social media attention (gain followers, drive national attention), go "viral" was the intent and clearly was achieved

That would be my guess for the likely earlier-than-anticipated ending to that story...

Maybe, but UT wasn't making any money from a whimsical tweet. And if that is an infringement, then the GIF sections available in Twitter and Facebook shouldn't be used by any individual or entity without proper payment to the source of the GIF.
This is the kind of thing UT needs to get national attention? Shrek as the mascot? I'm with Tampa Rocket. I'm not sure what the point of this was. Sorry, but put me in the not impressed category. 01-wingedeagle

Of course I'm 03-old. And will you kids PLEASE stay off my lawn?

Its very hard to get national attention (mentions by major media outlets)-unless it is bad type news, so if the name University of Toledo spreads via a social media to the extent of getting national press attention for something fun and unique-and at little or no cost-I fail to see the harm or concern.

UT Marketing and Communication keeps details stats on all media engagement, and in recent years positive stories about our faculty and students, especially research, have appeared in major media, but anything that gets people talking about UT in a fun positive way would seem to me good considering the negative attention that often floats around this place from certain local media and more generally around higher education across the country.

When there are several hundred mid to large size 4 year collages in the US (and dozens in our region that we compete with for students) getting attention is really hard regardless of your story and positive attributes. So I applaud UT Marketing and Communication for generating this interest.
If we can use Fiona as a mascot could we recruit the real Fiona for the offensive line? I’m guessing Cincinnati has the inside track, but she’d be a huge addition. Got good speed and is in the 500-600 pound range, while being short enough not to block the QB’s vision.
